Unhappy Dead Nook.

Cracked my Nook's eink display. Called support. Was honest about dropping it two feet (onto concrete). Didn't buy the warranty.

They say there's nothing they can do for me.

So buy the warranty is the lesson.

I am going to send an e-mail to them now and ask for a discount on a new one, or something. I know they are within their rights not to help me, but I am within my rights to tell the world that the darn screen is fragile! It fell less than three feet and died.

All eink screens are fragile by nature. Hopefully they will give you a discount on your next one though.

I'd happily buy the broken nook off you!, I have a broken one here myself and maybe can make a good one out of two bad!

or, ebay it, you could get quite a bit for it
either way, PM me a price / ebay number and good luck :-)

Hi All,

Some pointers if you try fixing broken screens

it IS possible to fix the screen on these.......BUT, it's more expensive than just buying another nook / e-reader with the same screen (i've been trying for a while to fix an old kindle on the cheap, no luck :-(

.......if you do go looking for a replacement screen, here's some pointers

Check nookdevs / teardown, I stripped my own broken nook and updated the page.........

The display is an.......AZ / Prime View ED060SC4

on each display is written a small number on a white sticker near a row of four little capacitors / model number information

the sticker says something like
-1.28
with a barcode,

This number is the negative bias voltage of the E-Ink display and is unique to each batch (yours may have -1.14 or -1.48 for example).....

This voltage is set with a very small (<3mm x 4mm) 100K Ohm Surface mount Cermet trim pot (single turn variable resistor) that's surface mount and is a pain to get a replacement for (most RS parts are just physically too big)

IF you replace your display, you have to adjust that resistor.........
problem is, it's under one of the metal EMF covers - the L shaped one by the sim card slot.......

There is some blue adjustment locking compound on the variable resistor which sticks to the metal cover..........

If you do pull off the cover, use a very small heater in the far corner up from the sim card holder, make the surface painful to touch

This should melt the locking compound and stop the cover from pulling off the top of the variable resistor when you pry it free

Adjust the resistor until you get good contrast on the display and page turns (or use a multimeter to check the voltage!).......then re-assemble

Good luck!

Just bought a Sony PRS-600 to replace the Nook. I will be taking it back and buying (another) nook. With the $%#@$! replacement plan.

I don't suppose you know the number of the pot on the pcb or is it obvious?

I have a new screen and will be doing the surgery on my broken Nook shortly!

(I ordered a new screen direct from China, not cheap but marginally cheaper than a new WiFi only Nook - which I also bought sort of for insurance)

:-)

I am also interested in what site you purchased the screen from. I haven't been able to find a replacement.

I'll dig it out....

... can't recall... but it wasn't a great success.

I took the nook apart and man you have to really take everything off and get back to bare pcb! Its held together mostly with double sided tape and getting the glued on aluminium back plate from the old screen was a nightmare.

I put the new one it, but, without fiddling with the pot' (as noted above) its unreadable, which means you need to take off (by heating gently with hot air) a metal cover (I'm assuming a Faraday cage) around the components with the adjuster pot'.

By that time the replacement Nook had arrived and I haven't had the time, with silly hrs at work kicking off during it all, that I've not gone back to it and finished it off (since I had a working Nook to read with).

It's on my list of unfinished jobs, but re-working my GPS for my SLR and some others are higher on the TTD list right now.

If you are desperate for it then PM me and I'll dig out the reference (which will have come from searching alibaba.com and contacting one of the factory reps) otherwise I'd say the uncertainty of getting a working screen out the back-end of it all makes it a hobby not a repair activity.

A.

@ Amnesiac Thanks so much for your detailed explanation. Maybe I will try and sell it on Ebay. Much too complicated for me to try and fix that screen. At any rate, I went out and bought a Cruz Ereader. Its a bit more complicated than the Nook but it will do. I just cant figure out what directory to put my ebooks in(the ones I dont get from Borders. Anyway Thanks again for your help.
