Angry Screen broken - chance to get a new one ?

Hi, I did it.
I have no idea how, but the screen of my 600 broke. It was actually just the whole f**** day laying on my desk
Now, I have this typical pattern on the screen like broken glass. Touch screen and functionality is still fine.

Now, two questions

1.) What do you guess is the chance to just receive a exchange model from Sony and if impossible, what do you guess do I have to pay for repair service ?

2.) I really loved my device a lot, just was a little bit disappointed by the pdf function. If in the worst case I'd to buy a new one, is there like a model combining the great features of the 600 + better pdf abilities ?

well that sucks. did something fall on it? or was it exposed to extreme heat? FWIW i good cover, such as the tuff-luv cover would prevent all mut the worst damage under normal conditions.

i have no idea if the warranty will cover this, i dont have it with me. hopefully, at worst they will exchange it for a small fee.

sadly, the only way you'll get better PDF support is with a much bigger unit. i dont even understand why sellers are offering PDF any more. especially places like lulu, where its the only offered format. its a format for publishers, who will be printing it, not e-readers.

Yeah, you know that is the funny thing.
I had actually the original leather cover and thought it might protect well the unit. I start to wonder myself if not somebody by accident hit it or leaned on it

I think as well that pdf it like the worst ebook format but I am working in science. And one point buying the device, was the possibility to read publications as well on it (or at least I told myself to not feel so guilty spending money on another gadget ).

When the screen of my PRS-505 had a similar unexplained crack-up, I called into Sony Support and they put me through to a Repair Technician. Costed me $103 for a replacement PRS-600 (refurbished) with free shipping and return shipping as well. But it was $103 vs $400 for a new replacement screen...

I've done the same thing to my PRS-600. I had too much stuff in my purse and now the screen is jacked up.

So, you would suggest calling Sony support to get the unit replaced? Is it cheaper to replace it or get the screen replaced?

They are on sale now for $200. I would rather replaced it for that than spend $104 for a "refurbished" one. Views on this?

Happy Father's Day everyone.

Well, transactions with Sony Support seem inconsistent from looking at other threads in the forum, and I can only speak from my own experience. My PRS-600 is working great, not a single scratch, clean and without blemish. Only problem was that it is red... but small issue. The "REFURBISHED" sticker behind is the only indication of its condition. Did not ask about replacing with a new unit, so you will need to find out.
Ebook reader prices are coming down, and it may be prudent to wait a little if you can afford to. Just my $0.02.

I called Sony as well and they proposed to me sending it to my reseller first. The guy actually told me I could be lucky and they would exchange it. So, I am waiting and hope everything gonna be fine

Chance to get a new one -- 0%

Unfortunately
I got the package back from my reseller, claiming that they cant exchange it since I was my fault. I should as well try to contact SONY directly.
This I did, with the final result that they told me repairing or whatever else would become more expensive than buying a new one

I am not sure whether I will buy again a SONY. First I chose it because of the touchscreen and linked to it the pdf function + annotations.

But lets be honest:
- pdf still sucks (zooming does not remember the last position, too small,....)
- annotations are completely useless if you cant fuse them with the document and just read them on your PC
- and without this the advantage of a touchscreen disappears almost completely

Probably I will go for a nook now

Well, if you do go that route, I've been hearing about a BestBuy deal going on which you might want to take advantage of: here.

I fear this is not relevant info for this thread and apologize in advance, but when I had my screen broken, this would have been something to cheer me up... hope it does for you.

Thanks, actually I was wrong.
I assumed that it was finally possible to order the Nook outside of the US*(located in Switzerland here) but it wasnt true.

No idea what to do now - spending twice 300 dollars for ereader ?

Ah, outside of the US... sorry. Don't know what alternatives you have then, other than to seek a refurbished replacement from Sony Support (if they offer one...). Cheaper alternative I would guess. My refurbished PRS-600 is great so far, and I've read a few hours each day for the last few weeks.
