Elitzr.com: Here’s Why Microsoft Should Make an E-Reader

http://elitzr.com/2010/06/heres-why-...e-an-e-reader/

Quote:
But now, with Amazon’s Kindle franchise, Apple extending its i-dominance to book publishing, and Google reprising its role as the tech industry’s Darth Vader in the stage production we call eBooks, shouldn’t Microsoft at least consider another look at eBooks?

Yes, they should.
Quote:
Ok, many are you would say the last thing we need is another eReader device platform, and you may be right. But if you look at it from Microsoft’s perspective, the company is dying a death by a thousand (mobile) cuts, and there’s no doubt they need to be a player in more markets than just desktop software and video games. Mobile is, as we’ve heard, the future, and an eReader is basically a application-centric mobile computing device.
Bring back .LIT!

Hey KJK - thanks for the link/comment.

What I didn't say in my article is there've been rumors up in Seattle area that Microsoft is indeed working on a eReader, but there are rumors all the time. I still think a dedicated eReader from Microsoft is a real possibility.

Exactly. I actually think there are alot of similaritites in the business models between the two markets. I'm working on a post on eReader subsidization that will touch on this.

Microsoft dropped the ball big time. They had the MSReader and LIT format when the only other game in e-Reader town was Palm!
Let's hope they come up with something though. Better late then never.

You know, I actually feel that Microsoft should not really bother entering the ebook market with a device.

Currently Microsoft make some really good peripherals (mouse, keyboard).
The original Xbox was great but they have dropped the ball on the 360 (rushed to get it out before it was ready IMHO).
The Zune isn't really a big hit (I don't even know if you can buy one here in Australia, never seen one in the flesh).

In my opinion Microsoft should (as much as I don't like proprietary software) concentrate on and build suitable operating system software to run ebook readers. MS have made some good inroads in the embedded OS market, and I think that is where their strength is. To come into the ereader now as a new player you either have to have (a) a damn better price and a damn better product than the competitors, or (b) new innovative device that has demand. As MS has never really been one to innovate in anything but software....the only real way they could compete now is a cheap but brilliant ereader.

Oh god. I'm picturing it turned on its side, screens like children's pocket books. :P

There is really very little difference between LIT and ePub, they are both compressed wrappers around HTML with metadata files.
