1)Purchased nook and got $50 gift card.
2)Asked if I could redeem for books online and that I didn't have a credit card. 3) I asked if it was like a I-tunes gift card and was told yes. And I-Tunes cards due not require a credit card. 4) Now cannot buy download e-book as I don't have a credit card or debit or bank account. Please let me know if a credit card is required? As if there is no workaround will be returning it to store tomorrow. Sent above to their customer support. Is this the Sad news? I have to take it back and lose even more additional monies as in a 10% restocking fees and forced to lose $30 balance on gift card? As wanted to use it to buy e-books as don't need any actual items in store? Get monies back for $20 case bought on it? Any help or info is appreciated! They use your CC number as part of the DRM encryption (AFAIK once the CC is there you can use a gift card to make purchases). Sucks that they didn't tell you that. The only workaround I can possibly think of would be one of those Visa Reloadable Prepaid Cards.

Thanks for the info AnemicOak!
I have calmed down a bit and realized that I will have many options for non-Drm and free-books. Also thanks for reminding me of the pre-paid visa,etc.. and will check if B&N actually accepts those or have some other restriction I don't know about. Also would like to find cheaper alternatives as $8 is kind of steep for older titles. They wanted $7 for Robert Jordan's 1st book of Wheel of Time and $8 for the rest in the series. I guess they want me to stick with free and library? Or for many torrent them? Seems kind of a gouge when I can buy used paper backs for $3 ea for the wheel of time series at a bookstore that has to buy shelve and track an actual book. Been reading with it and like it a lot. Just hope firmware upgrade for Genre category? As I may download a dozen or two free books by genre interest and don't remember the titles and authors but if I am in mood for Scifi then would like to scroll thru scifi books only. But so much for my ramblings and thanks again for your feedback. |

In a most of those cases, the $8 ebook has a price set by the publisher, and the used book has a price that's set by a used book reseller who probably paid 10% of cover price to the original book buyer.

orb, if you like Sci-Fi (and some fantasy) you'll want to check out Webscription.net if you haven't yet. Everything there is DRM free and their Free Library has tons of great books.

yeah this supports epub so as long as you don't mind sideloading books you are fine
but the advice to get a Visa or MC that you can load is something you should consider |

You might also see if your public library offers ebooks. The nook will support sideloading of both ePub's and PDF's from libraries that offer stuff through Overdrive.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
Just installed Calibre and added some pdf's seems to read fine tho the font size change from small to med is a big jump. With small being unreadable and medium being about 25%-30% to large but readable with a lot more page swipes. But that's not nook's fault. Pdf's are convenient tho cumbersome for e-readers to decipher. Another bummer I didn't read anywhere but was one of the selling points for me was cover flow. As I find it faster and visually easier to get to a specific book. Then to find out it's only for bought books B&N folder Bummer! Added a half-a-dozen scifi and fantasy books from AnemicOak suggested link. Will have to check out the others. Just hope for continued firmwares to add some things like By Genre,Folders, bookmarking, deleting books, cover flow my docs,etc... And doubt a possible speedup of the color lcd navigation? Ohh well have to realize that the nook is a work in progress and dream it gets to a level that puts more smiles on my old fart face. Thanks again all for the help and suggestions. |
