The details do say it is *not* a hardware recall but strictly to install new firmware and then they go back on sale.
This is...interesting...
Other gadget vendors in this possition would simply slipstream the update and rely on tech support to talk customers through the update.
On the other hand, Pandigital *is* targetting non-technical users with the Novel so the gesture might soothe some ruffled feathers with folks not used to V1.0 issues.
I think I'll give them a few brownie points for the gesture...
(Still not buying it until/if it can run Kindle for Android well, but they stay on the watch list for my money.

)

Hmm, I'm also thinking it might be worth keeping an eye out for where the refurbs might end up on sale.

truth or fiction. Pandigital says it is their current update which is required, nothing else. Another question, how do Mac owners download the updayes which appear PC oriented?

I don't see how it's PC oriented. The update is a ZIP file. Download it, copy it over USB, and reboot the Novel.

How is a PC required?

I believe that Apple insists that all Mac users rely only on their own proprietary archive format, the .WOZ.

Perhaps all ereaders should require the user to "register" their ereader while connected to a computer so it could:

download the latest firmware
supply some useful support numbers correct for their country
download the manual in the users language
choose a free library of books in the users language
set up a password and "if found please contact" screen

Doing this would avoid this type of recall, reduce support calls and reduce the number of unreadable books held on an ereader. My 2c.

EDIT: are you saying a Mac won't allow you to copy any file, with any extension, onto a USB memory stick/ereader? really?
