iPad care issues

I figured I would share my sorrow to possibly save some of you some money. Both my wife and I own ipads, she has the 3G, so she has only had it for a bit over a week, and the cases are on backorder. Either way she is not the most careful person, so today the worst happened, she tripped and the iPad hit the floor, glass is shattered, it still works fine, but the glass is toast. So I placed the dreadful call to apple support, and of course this is a non warranty issue and not covered under apple care as no glass ever is even with the iPhone.
The shock came when they told me they did not offer a glass replacement, they only offer a full replacement as a cost of $269
Anyway the moral of the story, if you bought an iPad treat it like it is as fragile as crystal to avoid his absurd charge of 269

You might try looking at the iPhone repair shops. It might be a bit early for spare parts, but they tend to stock things like replacement glass for iPhones, I'm sure iPads will be next. Also would depend on how handy you are if you want to install it yourself. Taking a look at iFixIt the iPad doesn't look too difficult to crack open.

condolences for your wife's loss..

$269 is cheap for a replacement 3G iPad. You could call your credit card company and see if they cover user clumsiness.

You may want to look into a squaretrade warranty if you're worried about breaking another iPad. It covers accidental damage and a 3 yr plan is $136.

link: http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/ipa...0:homepageipad

-Update-
Use coupon code PADLOVE30 to get the price down to $119.

slight update, I called back apple to order the replacement, but it turns out the 269 was a misquote, the 3g replacement is 319, and 352 after tax and shipping. The aftermarket repair facilities are hovering around 200, but I am guessing that is the end of the warenty. Even thought this is the way I will go. As for doing it myself, the glass and digitizer cost 129, so you could save 70 by doing it yourself, but from the videos I saw it looks like the lcd is reallgy glued well to the digitizer, so it is risky, as the lcd is another 99 if you good it up.
as for that protection plan I will look into it.

Hi Guest,
I don't think Apple has the Kindle as its main competitor in app related areas. There are many other systems hungry for apps and software of all kinds (windows 7 tablets, android and other mobile OS, the Kindle and other readers, etc).

Have you checked to see whether accidental breaking is covered by your home contents insurance? In the UK, at least, it very often is.

I ordered a silicone skin from eBay. Got the bright apple green to help me not sit on it on my black sofa. I got it for $.99 plus a couple dollars shipping from a seller in Flushing NY. I don't have to grip it so hard, if I lay it down on a table or something it sticks instead of wanting to slide off, and it solved my main problem which was the slipperiness. I recommend getting one of these to everyone ASAP.
