O'Reilly Two for One sale through 4/30/2010
O'Reilly really is one of the most enlightened publishers going. If you are interested in technical reference books, they have a two-for-one sale going on through April 30. Enter code "BYEBK" in the checkout cart.
As they say, "Download in 4 DRM-free formats: PDF, .epub, Kindle-compatible .mobi, and Android .apk". Their web site is: http://oreilly.com/ebooks/ Any publisher that makes a point of selling DRM-free books gets my cash. Robert |

I've purchased several of their epubs, and they are the best looking books I've seen. Regular Expression Pocket Reference, Second Edition is especially nice, the tables lay out very cleanly on my PRS-600 and I was very surprised at how well it works as an ebook.

Has anyone tried converting their pdfs to epubs with Calibre? I've gotten slightly paranoid about pdfs because they don't resize well on my 505, but the last few I've converted with Calibre had ... bad things ... happen to everything past the first page. And, as is the nature of such things (blame Murphy), most of what I want to buy from O'Reilly -- the pocket refs -- only seem to come in pdf.

Keep checking - the HTML & XHTML Pocket Reference I downloaded was EPub - and I think it looks great. 600 page pocket reference - but great...

I really want to get "Your Money: The Missing Manual" but I can't figure out a second book to get (I'm not big on technical manuals).

When I bought mine, they just took half off the prices of the books I was buying. I'm not sure if that only works if you buy more than one (I bought 4) but they just showed up at checkout as half-price. Try buying your book ... you can always cancel if it's full price when you get to the payment screen.
Or, if you're looking for another book to get, check the "hacks" and "annoyances" series. They're full of ways to make your life with technology more useful and pleasant. Me, I stocked up on pocket references. My paper ones keep getting buried on my desk. Or at least, on the place where I infer that a desk must exist, because something is keeping all that stuff off the floor. Speaking of pocket refs, I noticed O'Reilly is selling a MAKE-branded version of Sequoia's wonderful Pocket Ref. Now if only that was available as an ebook. I'd pay very good money to have that on my 505. I'm almost tempted to abandon ethics for a bit and visit the darknet; I've bought several copies of each edition they've come out with in paper (you can't have too many Pocket Refs) and I'd hurt myself whipping out my credit card if they would please sell me an ebook. |
