As The Gadgeteer put it: "Capital Ho, capital Hum."

If this is the best Palm can do, I'm worried.

I'll reserve judgment until we know the actual price. At any rate, the 680 is not meant to push the envelope, but rather to bring the smartphone to the mid-end market.

Exactly! The consumer market is much bigger than the high-end, biz market previous Treos were targetting. So it's possible that the 680 is a big win for Palm, even though it won't make geeks any happier. In the long run, I agree, Palm needs to do something to make the Treo line sexier again or competitors will take over.

I like the lack of an antenna. I'll keep an eye on this one for my wife who insists that she can't carry a cell and an organizer. I told her we could fix that.

I may be interested in it myself, now that I'm not reading on my Palm anymore.

This device is definitely not groundbreaking or earth shattering in any regards. It's a bit more toned-up, though, when comparing even against the 700p. But someone above nailed it right on the head: It is meant for price competition in the low to mid markets, so that Palm can expand their "influence".

If it does indeed go at around $200 to $250, I'll definitely be getting some for my family. They keep drooling over mine, but wrinkle their nose when they see how much I paid for mine.

I actually like the antenna on my Treo 700p... it's what I grab to pull it out of the belt holster!

Lightbulb Price and release

Engadget Mobile has the long-awaited price and release info:
Quote:
Treo 680: $424.99 straight, $349.99 one year, $249.99 one year with unlimited data (and $100 rebate), $274.99 two year, $174.99 two year with unlimited data (and $100 rebate; their ad, however, shows a $200 list price, but it's good to know we can count on around two Benjamins. Expect it November 5th (tentative).
