Lightbulb Get ready for new Palm handhelds

Ed Hardy from Brighthand writes Get Ready for New Palm Handhelds:
Quote:
I've seen some very good indications that Palm intends to release new traditional handhelds this fall. I haven't published anything about this before because I don't know any details and can't reveal where I got the information from.
...
Palm, Inc. has scheduled a press conference on October 12 at the DigitalLife show. It's possible that this will be the venue where Palm will announce its latest handhelds.
...
Why am I so certain? Because Palm still depends on handheld sales for a big percentage of its revenue. Despite the fact that the mobile industry is moving in the direction of smartphones, it will still be some time before things have completely moved in that direction.
I sure hope he's right, but I'm not convinced. That press conference may very well be for the official announcement of the Treo 680 rather than new handhelds.

I hope he's right too. I'm ripe for a new Palm. I've had this one for over a year!

Seriously, I've thought about replacing my (now seriously worn) TX, but there's nothing new to replace it with that's useful for me. Treo's are worthless for me since my cell phone use is just about nil.

...and don't forget that third line of business that Hawkins talked about! New handhelds would be nice, but I really want to see that entirely new product line.

Wasn't that the LifeDrive (which totally failed because of bad design decisions)?

An ehnanced LifeDrive which correctes the bad design decisions would be nice to see, though.

I would buy a "TX2" if they fixed the overly loud headphone jack. That background hiss is aggravating as hell.

Possible, but in my mind not likely. But that's a good point... I might be waiting to see something they aren't even working on!

My experience with the LifeDrive wasn't that bad. Some things crashed it, but they were easily fixed with a software update (it was usually a poorly written older Palm app that was the cause).

My issue was the slowness. Instead of using the hard drive as just a storage mechanism, they used it as main memory. So whenever you changed applications, it swapped out the old one to the drive and swapped in the new one. Slooooowwww.

Someone created a cache program that would keep frequently used programs in memory to speed things up, but my usage was such that the cache didn't help much, and frequently caused problems because there wasn't enough RAM for other things.

Unhappy Nope

No new handhelds it seems, unless they pull a rabbit out of their hat tomorrow.
