Protectedpdf on Iliad

Hello.... I'm kinda new to this. I own a Sony eReader and recently decided to purchase an Iliad because of the wireless connection and note functionality (size was a plus as well). I'm currently in school and all of my books are in Protectedpdf pdf format. I realize this is DRM (which I hate), but with this type of protection I just have to login and it checks a site to verify my credentials. I was hoping with the wireless connection (and the ability to enter text from a keyboard) on the Iliad that I may actually be able to read my school books. This; however, does not work.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how this might be possible?

Hopeful..... Tamara

I am a non-dev and non-expert, so this is just my personal opinion: This is a function that iRex will have to implement. There are licences involved and it has to be done via official ways.

We will just have to wait (or ask) if iRex will support DRM'ed PDF's

Thanks

I knew that normal DRM protection would not work without special programming, but since this actually just goes to a website to verify the authentication, I thougth maybe it would just work since the Iliad technically has an Internet connection.

I actually think it would work if I could just type on the first page of the document and then submit. This is the part where Iliad may have to do some programming, but I thought maybe someone else may have crossed this and found a solution.

Out of interest...are you permitted to print the protected PDFs? If so couldn't you 'print' them to another (unprotected) PDF file using software such as (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ ) and then load this file....? I'm sure there's probably some obvious error in this method (other than the extra time involved) and if so sorry just ignore me , just wondered if it was even feasible.

Is your school using FileOpen plugin? I think iRex has to work with all the content (solution) providers for a while to settle these DRM issues. I'll definitely like to read DRM materials on iLiad, but I am more keen to have DRM-less books to read, for DRM simply doesn't seem right for me. ( I want to BUY the book, and able to lend the book to others )

I 100% agree on the DRM-less world. Unfortunately, with this particular material, I don't have an option. This is what the school provides and it happens to use this new form of DRM protection. I've tried to find ways to hack it (I was able to with some other forms of DRM the school used to use) with no success.

Have you tried printing the PDF to a new PDF file from your computer first? Mac OS X can print directly to PDF from any print dialog box, and there are several free utilities for Windows boxes.

Mac OS X now checks for and respects DRM during printing so that trick no longer works.

I've stomped around the Poppler library (the open source PDF software iRex employs to view PDF's) and submitted small bits of code to the project. If you upload a PDF to http://www.rapidshare.com and PM me the link I'll see if Poppler can be easily modified to submit the access request.

Thanks Scott.... I've uploaded the file to RapidShare as you requested. Please let me know if you are able to do anything with it.

I have tried printing this straight to .pdf and it doesn't work. In fact, I can't even print out the entire book at one time because of the DRM.

Thanks for any help....

Scotty..... I uploaded the file to RapidShare but for some reason when I try to post with the link the post does not show up.

The file is located at rapidshare.com

and then files/31620891/Human_Resource_Strategy_-__Dreher___Doherty.pdf

I'm not sure how else to put this in here and get it to post. I'm assuming it must be something with my account on this forum and posting a link. Not sure. I'm quite new to this forum.

Thanks for any help you can provide..... Tamara

It looks like the text is simply hidden behind the image. I'm able to do a select all in evince copy/paste it to a document, but then you loose all the formatting...

Yeah, I have tried that as well, but the loss of formatting kinda stinks.

Were you able to copy and paste without logging in to the pdf?

I don't have a login, so no, sure didn't.

Also, pdf2html works in linux as well... again with the formatting issues though.

The desktop mobipocket reader converts it to the mobipocket format without problems, and i can read all the pages in the computer as any other document, i can´t try the mobipocket file in the Iliad now, but i suppose it should work. I hope this helps.

Jose

edit: there is no pictures, and no footnotes, so i guess it is not the solution

Thanks Templario, I will give that a try here at work and then upload to the Iliad tonight. That will be great if it works.

I honestly never thought to try that, such a simple solution if it works.
