Kindle for the PC

I've heard about this "Kindle For The PC" software from Amazon.

I currently use the EZReader device and the ePub ebook format.

I can "De-DRM" Mobipocket formats and convert them into the ePub format.

Is there a way of "De-DRMing" the kindle ebooks that I'd download via the "Kindle For The PC"?

By the way, I use Python26 with the MobiDeDRM.V0.02 script (or the V0.01) to De-DRM Mobipockets.

I also use one of the Calibre programs to convert from Mobipocket to ePub.

Yea, there is a way. Google it up really quickly, and you will find a guide. I think there was one here posted somewhere, and mods removed it.

The latest mobidedrm script is v0.12 (or v0.13), so you may want to upgrade. This version can be added as a plugin to Calibre, which removes one step from the conversion of MOBI to ePub.

For Kindle for PC, Amazon changed the DRM scheme - so mobidedrm on its own does not work. Instead you use unswindle.pyw, which is easier to use than mobidedrm, but has to be applied separately from Calibre.

Just as a point, though, although Topaz books can be de-drm'd, they're a bunch of images and have to be OCR'd so you'll have to do a lot of cleanup.

Anything that's a mobi file is easy using the above info.

The biggest downside to buying Kindle ebooks for non-Kindle use is TOPAZ ebooks. They are a small fraction of the total, but a very large fraction of the Kindle-exclusive ebooks. One way to tell is that TOPAZ ebooks don't include the ebook's file size on its Kindle web page. The safest approach, though, is to download the sample and run it through unsindle.pyw. This will identify any TOPAZ ebooks.

I have some scripts for modifying the TOPAZ ones, but one asks for a pid. Since, my device is the Kindle for PC, I need a script that will identify its pid.

Don't put the option for the pid. With Kindle for PC it's not necessary.

I don't have a Kindle, but have downloaded some Kindle for PC ebooks and removed the DRM. The last ebook I bought was in TOPAZ format, so unswindle.pyw will not remove the DRM.

Is there any other way to remove the DRM from this TOPAZ ebook? If so, could some kind soul please point me in the right direction? - by private message if necessary.

Regards, Alex

CMBDTC will strip the DRM from topaz files, but since the only topaz reader is Kindle, that won't do you much good. If you search for "apprentice alf"'s blog, you can find a collection of python tools that will also attempt to convert the topaz into something usable. (That's a little easier than reading through the 1229 comments on dark reverser's blog.)

Thanks, I think I've found the python files (with help) and have run them on the Topaz book. But all I get is folders full of svg or xml or xhtml files. Am I doing something wrong? Is the end result supposed to be a mobi file?

Regards, Alex

I haven't tried to dedrm topaz files but that sounds about right. From what I understand, topaz is a bunch of image files, not text. After stripping the drm, you have to ocr the images and then reassemble and edit the ebook. It comes down to a lot of work.

My suggestion is to just stay away from topaz.

The few topaz books I wanted, I found elsewhere. They were a bit pricier, but they were in epub format so I was able to acually read them on my PP

The OCR has already been done by Amazon. You need to correct the HTML output and then compile the HTML into your favourite ebook format (Calibre will do that for you).

Topaz is a completely different file format to Mobipocket. The Topaz tools do an amazing job interpreting this undocumented file format, and outputting the data.

But you'll still need to clean up the HYML output and use Calibre (or Mobipocket Creator) to convert that to Mobipocket format.
