Solved: The mystery of the missing keypresses when attempting page turns
Hi:
As long as I've had the PP I've had the issue all the time of missing keypresses when turning the pages. Quite annoying and I've never completely understood the cause. I am happy to report I have solved this. I was running the new March firmware with no issues other than the normal keypress issues, when I noticed that the battery level was a bit lower than it should have been (I read mostly pdfs). I was reading messages here, when I saw some comments about how there's a power issue involving the SDHC slot. I thought to myself, this is a clue. See, the SDHC card I've been using in the reader is the one that it came with, it's a very slow card, reads and writes at about 3 megabytes a second. All my firmware flashes were done using that card. I decided to try flashing in the December firmware with my good quality Class 6 Transcend card that I have in my camera just in case that the power issues were more than just the SDHC. I noticed the flash process went faster with this card. Next, I copied the books from the card, to the device's available internal memory. It had about 370 megs free, so plenty of room to work with. I then removed the SDHC from the device and.. No more missed keypresses. The device catches every page turn now. What still needs to be tested, perhaps by the new person Astak hired to test these things out: -To see if a Class 6 SDHC card does not have the keypresses issue (this may be the case, as there are people here who say they don't have this issue). If it does, there are a variety of software based solutions. -To see if the March firmware power issues go away when you use only the internal memory and not a SDHC. -To see if the presses are specific to specific versions, we know now that it doesn't happen with the December one when using internal memory only. So there you have it, the culprit is the SDHC. |

Am I reading right?
The Pocket Pro has an SD Slot Power issue? Like the Pro has a Built-In Error to start with? Please let me know as I'm waiting for mine to arrive. Thanks |

I was running a Patriot 4G HC class 6 card without power issues (reading lots of epubs) on March.
Lost key presses, yes. I am blaming (no solid proof) SD card corruption on Mar, now on Dec Last edited by theducks; 03-23-2010 at 09:44 PM. Reason: added brand |

cancelx: I tend to consider it more of a software issue. Perhaps all it needs is the latest linux kernel.
theducks: Try reading without your card in the system. |

Great info for further review

I copied your entire post (I work for Astak) and have forwarded it to our techs. They will research this further. We MAY have a good solution here; and I am happy that you solved your problem. Cancelx: No, the slot does not have a problem. The problem is (perhaps) running the wrong type of card in the slot. Nothing is wrong with the device... but this may help narrow down a report a few end users saw their battery charge life dramatically decrease when they did the March Firmware Upgrade while others had no problem at all. We are all trying to straighten out that firmware upgrade so we can confidently post it again. Sunspark: Thank you. Excellent research!! |

Maybe we should start listing which SD card we are using, and if we had a problem with the March firmware.
PNY's Optima SD HC, 4 GB NO problem at all with battery or other items. I've kept up with the firmwares, and now have the March 2010. No issues at all, [except no TTS ![]() AJ And I ALWAYS exit a book, and Turn the PP OFF before pulling the SD card out. Last edited by AJ Starr; 03-23-2010 at 09:43 PM. Guys, don't get sidetracked here.. AJ has the issue too.. he has to do a second press sometimes. Listing cards isn't helpful in this thread. What I'd like to see experimented with would be updating the kernel from 2.6.21.7 to 2.6.33.1 With newer drivers for everything running, potentially all this can be resolved quickly. Depends whether or not Jinke is willing to explore this avenue. If not, we'll likely have to wait and see what kernel version they bundle with the v3+ which will use the same controller as the v5.

I don't have this issue when turning pages only when playing with the menu sometimes like to change fonts or to bookmark. It's almost always happens when using the bookmark options. I now wait for the light to go out each time before hitting the next key. This seems to solve the issue for me.
I'm using December firmware with a Sandisk 8gb SDHC card. I'm still on my first charge from March 5th. Battery is still at two bars. ![]() |

It is NOT a charge life issue. That's just spin making it sound better than it is. It goes flat in an EXTREMELY short period of time (an hour or two) indicating something kept running consuming power when the device should have been in a quiescent state. |

Just wanted to add - if you think we are running the "wrong type of card", think again. I have only ever used the one Astak supplied to me with the reader.

I am using a 16gb class 2 SDHC. My battery is constantly needing to be recharged at least once a day right now... Kind of annoying to have to read next to plug. I had some problems with page turns but after restarting the PP it seems to resolve. I also cannot seem to listen to music while reading. If I put the music on and then try to read my book the device takes me back to the menu page after loading until I unplug my headset. This is only in Txt formatt and I have not tried it in anyother formats.

I'm using December firmware with a Kingston 2GB card shipped with the reader- never had an issue with the key press. Once i did a "soft start" , but this is it. Still on my first charge, but i connect the reader to the PC a lot. And i am using my reader every day.
