Question Hm... What did I do?

It's late and I'm tired, and I can't seem to figure out how I did it... but somehow I lost ALL of my books on my pocket pro. I'm sure it's something simple (or stupid)...

So here's what I did. I had about 30-40 books on the SD card of my PP. I decided I wanted to rework my folders, so I connected the reader to my computer with the USB. I went into Windows Explorer, and deleted everything on the card. (I'm thinking that was not good, maybe I deleted something I shouldn't have?) Then I went into Calibre and got the folders set up the way I want them. I could see all 240 books in Windows Explorer, in their various folders. Then I disconnected (including clicking the little icon in the lower right hand corner of my computer that says to disconnect). I then looked at my Pocket Pro... and the only folder listed is Recently Read, and it's empty. I hooked it up to my computer again, and there are all the books and folders... so I disconnected, and I still can't see anything on the pocket pro. I thought maybe there's something wrong with my folders, so in Windows Explorer I copied about 4 of them over to the internal memory. When I disconnected I could see those on the internal memory, but the memory card still appears to be blank according to the Pocket Pro...

So what could I have done? I'd appreciate any help. It's way past my bedtime, so I'm just going to put it away for tonight, and hopefully tomorrow when I look at it I'll see something dumb I missed tonight. But in case I still can't figure it out in the morning, does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks! Oh, and I also tried putting the card directly into my computer (after powering down the PP), and I can see all the folders and books that way, too. Oh, and something else strange... when I hooked the Pocket Pro up to my computer and Calibre started doing its thing where it looks for books on the device, it would go up to 67%, then jump down to 20something %, then jump back up, and back down again... like it wasn't sure if there were any books on it, or not. I think Calibre is just as confused as me! And as a last resort I just tried reinstalling the firmware upgrade, but that didn't seem to help either...

I got it!

I don't think I would have been able to get to sleep without getting this figured out. I decided to have my computer show the hidden files. There was a hidden file for adobe digital editions, but when I tried deleting it, it said it could not be deleted as it was a corrupted file. I couldn't open it, or do anything with it. So I went over to the internal memory and found the adobe file there, copied it to my card, and then I was able to delete the corrupted file. I disconnected from the computer, and suddenly all my books showed up! So somehow that corrupted file was making everything hide. Ok, now I can go to sleep.

That is just Weird

I would have Windows check you PEz drive for errors. I have never had so many corrupt file system problems, as I have with using SD cards. I have USB 'pen' drives that give me no grief. I have many brands of SD cards, all make errors.

Thanks, Dreams! Once I got that figured out, I slept great! Otherwise I would have just stayed awake, thinking about it all night long. *l*

Ducks, how would I do that? I don't really know that much about computers, I just blunder along until I figure out what I need. I'm just glad it's working now!

If you use Calibre, Right click the tool tray icon by the clock and Quit

Connect to Windows as you would normally.
Close any windows that opened when you connected (you can not fix a file system that is being used elsewhere)
Explore My computer. Locate the drive that represents the SD card on your PEz (or optional card reader).
Right click. Select Properties.
Select the Tools tab near the top
You wan the "check for errors" section
Run that
Tick the "Fix..." box
untick the bad sectors box if ticked.
run
If it says, the drive is "In use".
Your antivirus needs to exclude that drive or there is some other program accessing (Indexing, A/V, Calibre...) the drive.

Later:
If the PEz shows a "Found.xxx" folder, that is the broken file piece catcher the Repair tossed them into. This folder is hidden by default within Windows. The folder+contents can be deleted to get the space back (it is not considered "trash")

Oh wait... now while looking through my folders on my Pocket Pro I do see FOUND.000. I will delete it tomorrow, when I hook up again to my computer. It's funny... I noticed bookmarks weren't working for me all day, and it wouldn't remember the last place I was in a book when I would leave, and come back. And Recently Read was always empty. But I tried it again just now, and now bookmarks are working again. Could it have to do with that "found" thing?

Yep! Corrupt file chain ( A file is made up of 1 or more blocks that are chained together.) Your file chain got broken and the file could not find the place in it to write your bookmarks.

Always wait for the activity LED to stop (activity) flashing, before removing the card or disconnecting the cable (connected mode)

Hm... a few times when I've tried opening a book or navigating in a very large book, the Pocket Pro seems to lock up. The green light is steady, rather than blinking, and just sits there. When that happens, nothing seems to help... I've tried hitting the little arrow button to go back to the previous screen, as well as the menu button, and also tried locking the keyboard. Finally I've just given up and held down the power button until it restarted. Could that be what caused the corrupt file? And if so, is there something else I should do (like just put it down and walk away for a half hour, or so, and see if it does something)?

Some "lockups" can be exited by holding the return button for 10-15 seconds (not a quick press).

Power OFF while reading should not do it.
Power OFF while saving a Bookmark, place, could, it is writing the markers and updating the file allocation table (FAT)

Some books take time to open.
My complaint with the DEC 09 FW was: this was taking minutes for EPUBS under 1M and only 20 secs. with the NOV 09 FW.
Kind of hard to spot a lockup with times like that.

A corrupt file system could cause lockups if the viewer software can't report "File I/O error" and exit gracefully to the menu.

Dear Davimee:

Just a reminder: check your battery charge life meter. If it is under 1/2 recharge fully. The Pocket PRO gets cranky when it gets low on power!

Ducks, if it happens again, I'll try holding down the return button. Thanks!

Robert, my power meter is still at 100%! That's the first thing I checked. I haven't had as much time to read as I'd like, but still, the battery is lasting longer than I expected!

Dear Davimee:

Thank you. I know I must sound like a repeating machine with the battery charging. I just do not want anybody to have problems; and that is the most common!!

Yes, the battery charge on the Pocket PRO seems to last forever!!
