Adding books to my EZReader

Hello,

I have a question... I buy most of my books from BooksOnBoard and it seems that all the books I get do not show the cover (picture as as it shows when I buy). It just gives title and author.

can anyone tell me how to get the actual cover. I had bought one book and that one DID have the cover. Is it from this company or the the reader or something else that does not allow me to get the cover.

Thanks in advance

Many ebooks don't include the original pbook cover, because the publisher does not have a license to use it for an ebook. So they often have a generic cover, or no cover at all. It seems that publishers do have a license to use the cover for on-line sales, which is why you see it at Books on Board.

If you strip the DRM (encryption), I think Calibre can download the cover (e.g. from Amazon) and add the cover for you although I have never tried adding a cover.

@readinggal
Yes, covers can be added by using the program Calibre.
Also welcome to the forum.

Hi readinggal!

I sometimes add covers to my ebooks through Calibre. I only know how to do it when I'm converting the format (for instance going from lit to epub). First I look up the "cover" or picture I want in Google Images and save that image to my desktop. I try to find pics that aren't too small (anywhere from 250x400 or a little bigger seems to work well enough - at least for me). Then in Calibre when I start to convert a screen pops up to type in Title, Author, Output Format, etc. On that screen it gives you the option to "change cover image" so I just click on the "browse" button and find my pic on Desktop. It will show you the pic you selected and then you can hit ok to convert.

I have no idea how to add a cover without converting the format though. I have several ebooks already in epub that I want to change/add the cover but I don't know how to since I'm not converting the format. Maybe if someone else knows? If not in Calibre maybe some other program...

Anyway hope this helps a little. I annoys me when I buy an ebook and the cover is not there (even though it may be for legal reasons). I like to have the covers if possible - just like if I bought the printed copy.

Hi Weezie, I believe to add covers you still have to convert. If you've got an epub, just click convert, and convert it to an epub. You can also click "Edit Meta Information." Once in there, you can either upload the cover like you previously suggested, or click "download cover" down at the bottom of the screen. Sometimes the program will find a cover, and sometimes it won't. But if it does, it saves me having to search for one. And sometimes I don't care for the cover it downloads, so I'll still search in Google. Once you're through there, you have to convert the book, to make the cover stick. Otherwise you'll still see it in Calibre, but from what I understand, if you don't convert the book, you won't see the cover in any other program. And if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone here will correct me. I hope that helps! Oh, and when you convert to the same file type (epub to epub), I believe it writes over itself, so you don't have two copies of the same thing.

Be advised, that converting an EPUB -> EPUB may add a second "Jacket" section .
If you converted from something else originally, just do it again. It will replace the EPUB

Thanks for the help Davimee. Calibre will not even let me convert because the ebooks are formatted as Adobe Content Server Message (???) -- bought from Fictionwise as Secure Adobe PDF. I'm able to use Adobe Digital Editions to add to my Pocket Pro. But Calibre will not "allow" me to convert DRM'd PDF.

Guess I'm just stuck with the goofy generic covers for those books. Even if I can somehow remove DRM it's not worth it. Too much trouble.

In the future I may try to buy more lit or html rather than DRM formats. At least I know I can convert those and add covers if necessary.

Thanks again! Slowly I'm getting used to all this "fancy-smancy" junk with DRM but it's still frustrating. Go figure!

If you use Calibre to convert, It inserts the Meta-data notes and details in a section (at the front) with the words Book Jacket centered.

Weezie, I haven't even tried anything with DRM books yet, so you're a step ahead of me. All I've downloaded are the free ones I've found online. I'm still waiting for my Pocket Pro, so so far I'm just experimenting with what I've learned here on the forums.

I found out, the hard way
I Used Sigil to remove the un-wanted entries.

I was scratching ends trying to figure why it was happening

Davimee,
I'm so glad the Pocket Pro allows DRM ePub and pdf, otherwise I would be totally confused. I'm pretty clueless on the DRM stuff so at least I know I can always buy ePub or pdf. I've been able to convert MSReader files too, that's not very hard for me.

I really like the PPro, especially the fact I can use the SD card. For me it's easier using the SD card than downloading to the PPro memory.

Good luck when you receive it. Everyone is really nice on the forums so if you have questions there's always someone around to help.

Dear readinggal:

I work for Astak and just wanted to welcome you. We are happy you are here and posting.

I cannot help you with Calibre as that is separate from Astak. Others on here know it far better than me! And... I know they will help! The people at this Astak Dedicated Forum are incredibly helpful and a very "giving" group.

There will be a formal announcement next week on a new place to buy the latest bestsellers and other "for purchase" eBooks and 1-1.5 million free Google eBooks too. This will be an Astak website. Stay tuned!
