Crosswords on Iliad

Long ago, I wrote a Ruby script to convert Across PUZ files into Postscript files (that I subsequently turn into PDFs using ps2pdf).

While I'm really hanging out for iRex to get PDF annotation working, so I can then fill in my PDF crosswords, it dawned on me that if I could convert my PDFs into PNGs, I could use them as notepaper in the interim.

I believe I'll be able to do this using some of the netpbm tools eventually, but for the time being, I downloaded a trial version of a Windows program that will hopefully continue to work until iRex finishes the development.

Anyway, I thought people might like to see what's possible, so here's a PNG of the current crossword from Private Eye magazine.

WARNING ... Private Eye is an English satirical magazine and this crossword includes words and concepts that may offend some people. Please don't download this if you feel you may be such a person.

Note that because there are many down clues, they've run off the bottom. I should be able to fix this by decreasing the size of the squares in the crossword grid, but haven't bothered yet.

Also, the conversion from PDF to PNG obviously causes some pixels to be lost. That's why I'm keen to get the PDF annotation update from iRex.

Pretty clever!

A crossword puzzle pack was one of the first commercial apps for the Newton when it first came out.

Crossword puzzles, is that the game where you have words written between burned pixels...I mean blacked out squares ?

How many can you fit on an Iliad screen ?

By modifying the size of the squares and making the font slightly smaller, I've been able to fit crosswords cleanly onto the screen.

I've attached another image so you can see what it looks like.

At the moment, I'm still having to convert it to a PNG, until we get an update of the PDF viewer that lets me scribble on a page. So, the text isn't perfect. However, it's quite usable.
