Comics on MobileRead

Do many people on here read comics as well as books.
All the talk of colour readers and tablets got me thinking what a perfect medium they are for reading comics.

Marvel and DC are playing with online viewers and digital comics so surely its only a matter of time till eComics are around.

is mobileread the place to discuss it or would discussing comics on here be like discussing Music?

Personally i think it would be good if Mobile read added a comics forum, it woul attract different users and also have appeal to those that consume both.

I don't read any superhero comics, but I do read graphic novels from time to time (obviously not on my 505 because it's not suited). When I was younger I was a rabid fan of the Hernandez brothers and their 'Love & Rockets' comic books. I'm hoping the Apple tablet will rekindle my interest (pun definitely intended) There's a lot of indie stuff I haven't read, but would love to read if the device announced tomorrow suits that purpose.

Here's a piccie of Love & Rockets, just because I haven't seen it in years

Yes comics have huge potential and are only just being tapped into. Larger format readers are coming which will be able to display them at their native size. Sony has launched the comic delivery service to PSG and there of course is tons on Manga available.

I personally really like Marvel's on-line service with the smart panel view. If I could get that in an existing reader and be able to buy from different publishers(so I guess I'm asking for a comic viewer standard) i'd be happy until color comes along this year or next( or the next...)

You're very welcome to discuss them here at MR - the "Reading Recommendations" forum is probably the best place. Unfortunately, at the present time, we don't accept comics or manga as uploads in our book uploads forums.

Wait... really? You mean, if I created an original graphic novel, and converted it to, say, MobiPocket, I would not be allowed to upload it? I did not know this...

That is our current position, yes. As with all MR policies, it is subject to review, should a demand arise.

Pity. I guess my 100-page illustrated version of Metropolis will not be going anywhere...

I was not aware of that, where is it stated? And where do you draw the line between comics/manga and artwork/illustrations? I uplodaded some books consisting (almost) solely on etchings or engravings, how is a comic different (assuming it's not under copyright, of course)? I even made a "work-in-progress" comic upload and nobody mentioned it.

I'm honestly not sure that it is stated anywhere, Jellby; it's a decision that Alex (MR's owner) made a long time ago. He'd be the best person to talk to about it.

Sorry for the confusion. Indeed, we had a discussion on comics in the past because of the unclear copyright status of various manga works. But if you are absolute clear on the free copyright status of your comic, feel free to upload it.

I am new comic reader as well.

Speaking of devices for reading comics digitally, the first thing that comes to mind is iPad. But i find it useless, because I want it to be e-book reader also, but I refuse to read books from LCD screen. (I currently own one e-reader with eInk screen, but I don't use it for comics)

But I think for us, the comic book geeks, there is a lot of hope. The new generation of readers that will use the new "eletrowetting" screen technology. I think it takes one more year, till they are massively on the market with more reasonable price.
