PRS300 = hell on wheels

Ok I am a patient man - BUT Do not buy a SONY PRS-300 - I have spent many days trying to get it authorized for Adobe DRM protected content and no luck. I'm calling my local Sony centre tomorow to demand a full refund.
Ive dealt with some tricky software in my tinme but this beats me hands down. I accept defeat.

I bought a used 505, I did not have to authorize it I just used the same ID and Password, I've always used with Adobe. I also made sure to use the same ID and Password with the Sony Reader Library software. Maybe the process is the same for the 300. I haven't had any problems.

OK. We've had several people finding it difficult to authorise their Sony Readers (of various kinds) with Adobe Digital Editions.

Does anyone want to volunteer a step-by-step guide? If so, post it in a new thread, with a link here if you're feeling generous, and I'll make it a sticky.

(I authorised mine a while ago and have completely forgotten how I did it, alas.)

Have no idea how it was that I authorised mine, and that was only a couple of weeks ago.

I do seem to remember something about needing to go to the Adobe site and I then had trouble getting their new AIR plugin to work within my browser which was needed during the registration. The rest of it must have been pretty straight forward for me or I'd remember more about it. Sorry.

Basially I plugged it in to the PC. The reader s/ware started. I went to the Sony site and registered the device. I then downloaded some free epub books. According to the Users Guide.pdf manual which comes on the device - if you look under Setings "About" there should be some reference to the fact that the device is authroised for adobe DRM Protected Content. Indded tha manual states the following:-

"You can check whether the Reader is authorized from “About” in
the “Settings” menu. ( page 60) If it has already been authorized,
“Authorized for the eBook Store.” or “This device is authorized for
Adobe DRM content.” is displayed"

Well all it does say is "This device is not authorized for Adobe DRM authroized content". I have spoken to Sony (who told me "well it should work " I walked for 90 mins to THE massive sony store in London ("use Adobe 9 reader on your PC) - er yes I am doing that. I have 30 years professional IT expereince of operating systems from Xenix, Unix, Novell, NT, Cisco, Juniper etc but this has me beat. Shame as I love the screen. E-Ink is sensational/

Just to be clear, your problem is not with the 300. Your problem is authorizing Adobe DRM. I understand your frustration, but it no good to come on a forum and tell people "Do not buy the Sony PRS-300". If you can't figure it out, return it. I would suggest a Kindle, since their DRM is tied to the device and their store.

Maybe this thread will help you. There was an Adobe employee who was able to reset the IDs so the person with the problem could start over.

Quote:
Here's how it's supposed to work (and does)

1.) Authorize ADE with an AdobeID
2.) Attach Sony Reader (or other supported device) and authorize it with your AdobeID (up to 6 devices)
3.) Buy books
4.) transfer books to Sony Reader.
(*5 Authorize ADE with an AdobeID on a seperate computer - up to 6, and be able to transfer and read content)
Quote:
With ADE running on Windows and now authorized to the correct AdobeID plug in the reader

If the Device Authorizitaion dialog show up, Authorize the device and skip the next step.
If it doesn't ask you to Authorize, but shows up in ADE:

* press "Ctrl+Shift+E", this will bring up the "Device Deactivation" dialog
* select your Sony Reader and deactivate it.
* Unplug and replug your Sony Reader
* The Device Authorization dialog should show up, and you can Authorize to the correct AdobeID.

I know its frustrating but we're not with you and can only start from point "A". Maybe contacting the Adobe rep in the referenced thread would be the way to go.

I have spoken to Adobe twice (they could not help). I have raised email to Sony over a week ago (they have not replied) I have spoken to Sony Tech support - they said speak to Adobe. I went to Sony Centre in central London. They said "use Adobe 9 and it will work". It did not. Everyone says "er yeah erm ah yeah I had this once but I cant remember how I fixed it".

And - MORE to the point - if you Google this issue - it is infamous. So forgive me if I sound slightly jaded - e-book technology is very basic - but this is completely ridiculous and beyond anything one should have to experience is this day and age. I am a patient guy but rapidly forming the opinion that - despite the best of intentions - noone has a darn clue.

Did you actually download and install ADE on your PC (not just the Sony Reader software that started when you plugged the 300 into the PC)?
