Smile Hi, everyone!

You can tell, I'm new, as I already posted a message in the wrong place. Hopefully, this is correct. Although I'm relatively new to MobileRead forums, I've visited this site many times for helpful information and advice.
I own a Sony 505 Reader, and enjoy downloading books from my local public library.

Hi & welcome to MR. Don't worry about posting in the wrong place - if it's reaaaaally wrong, the mods are happy to move it. If it is only slightly wrong MR is big enough to overlook it and move on. Enjoy your participation here.

Complete newbie searching for a device

Hello all. As I have had to retire because of my lousy health, and now with an inordinate amount of time on my hands, I am reading voraciously. Having always been a reader, I have watched curiously the last several years as the ereaders developed. I have enough smarts to know to NEVER buy a first model of anything. I am also watching with some interest the drama over format play out as with VHS vs. BETA. How funny!

I have been researching Calibre, and am intrigued by it to use for my ebook collection, and possibly the operating system of whatever device I wind up with. I really like the possibilities of open source software, and don't want to be tied down to one corporation or another. Calibre seems to fit the bill.

Ok, I hope someone will be able to steer me towards a reliable, relatively economical device. I can't believe there is not a company out there (foreign or otherwise) who can produce a robust little device without all the fluff that no one REALLY wants or needs.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may be able to give this newbie getting ready to abandon paper.

Thanks again for any advice

Hi daveandronilu, and welcome. About a month ago I was looking for my first ereader and got lots of information by just following the various threads on here. It certainly helped me towards a decision - I've had an iRex DR800 for a couple of weeks now and think it's fantastic. Whether it's right for you I couldn't say - nor whether you would consider it economical (that depends whether you are in the US or not), but it meets your requirements for being open source - and there are lots of people on MobileRead who like developing apps and enhancements for it. It's robust and has a large screen - comparatively speaking. As a fellow newbie I have nothing to compare it with, which is where all the wise people who inhabit this place come in.

Hope you soon get some clarity!

Little too much for my budget....

Thanks so much for your kind reply. However this device calculates to $677 USD. For that I could purchase a couple of different readers. It certainly looks interesting, but I want to get something a bit lower end at first.

Regards..
