Is the screen almost as good as the 300?
I understand the touch feature on the 600 and 900 have some inherent reduced screen crispness. But I have been comparing the 300 and 600 at my local Target. I think I like the larger screen and the additional text size options. However as we all understand the contrast and even the text sharpness on the 300 is clearly better.
Is this the same case for the 900 screen? Is it a significantly noticable difference? If I could create some grading factor as a standard to compare to I would give the 300 screen contrast and text crispness arbitrary values like 100 each. So all values as compared to the 300 values of 100 are: Sony Prs 600 Contrast-65 text sharpness-85 If you feel these numbers need adjustment please do so So where does the Sony Prs 900 come in? |

In my opinion, having owned both the 900 and the 300, the answer is definitely no. While I think the 900 is better than the 600 (basing this off the 600 I used in Best Buy), its definitely not as clear as the 300. I owned the 300, bought the 900, and returned the 300 2 weeks ago. I thought I could get used to needing a book light at ALL times with the 900, but in the end, I couldn't. So I am sending the 900 back to Sony, and I repurchased the 300 a couple of days ago.
Now, with a nice book light, the 900 is just as readable as a 300 (again, to me). In normal light I needed the book light to counteract the glare, and in darker rooms I needed the light to read. A book cover with built-in light might have made a difference for me, as I got tired of carrying around the 900 and a light. I really liked the 900 a lot, so it pains me to return it. |

Yup, low-light is the bane of the 600/900. Reading lights are practically a must in the evening.
The problem is that the touch layer is scattering and reflecting more of the light than you'd expect, so good direct light helps overcome that. The 300 can be read more clearly in low light, and will reflect less light off the glass (so you won't see your face in it at the wrong angles). However, both the 300 and 900 will reflect bright things equally (like the bulb in the lamp) and introduce glare that way. Last edited by Kolenka; 01-13-2010 at 03:19 PM. |
