Down loaded but cannot upload
I have just downloaded 3 books from WHSmith (UK) for my Sony 505. When I come to upload, apparently they are not in a format that can be used, I get a warning that no suitable source was found. I am using Calibre 0.6.14 which has been great up till now.
Can you give me any help on this, please? |

Apparently the book above are in ACSM format. Does that mean anything to anyone? They were bought as EPUB ebooks.

An "acsm" file is a not a book itself - it's a download link which instructs the Adobe Digital Editions" software how to download the book. If you double click the file, it should open in ADE (if it doesn't, right click it, and use the "Open With..." menu command). ADE will then download your book, and you can then transfer it to your Reader.

You have to open acsm files with Adobe Digital Editions, which will then download the epub file. It is usually stored in the <your username>/documents/my digital editions folder, if you are using windows. You can load it onto calibre and onto your reader from there.

Thanks all. I have loaded using ADE. But I think for a technophile like me I shall steer away from WHSmith in future.

I believe it would be the same for anywhere you want to buy epub from. It certainly is the same when I buy from waterstones. It's not really that complicated when you get used to it.

Correct - this is the way that all DRM-enhanced ePub books work. As you say, it's not difficult.

The problem is not WHSmith - all books sold in the secure ePub format will use an acsm file to download the ePub.
Just open the .acsm file. ADE will open and download the ePub file. Then close ADE, open Calibre, add the book to Calibre and sideload to the reader. It's not hard, really. |

Also, if your Sony Reader is plugged in with Adobe DE running you can drag the ebook from ADE straight on to reader bypassing Calibre altogether. Unless you want the file to live in your Calibre library instead of your Adobe DE library

Thanks guys. you have been very helpful. I found ADE very difficult. I don't know why, but maybe I didn't have the time when I bought the 505 to fully understand it. So I have switched to Calibre and found it very user friendly. Now all my books are on there and its easy to take on and off.
There are lots of people who are buying these ereaders and the insturctions are just too complicated. I wonder if the kindle is easier and that is why they are so popular with the group who are technophobes, or have little understanding on how a computer can work for you. |

If you go with the sony library software when you hit the ascm link to download the book it opens the library and downloads it straight in to the library, bypassing DE and even goes straight in to a collection of books you have bought. I know the sony software gets plenty of stick but the latest version really work quite well and if you just want to buy books and put them on your reader it works really well
