600 just ordered
Yaaaaay - I'm so happy.
I just want to say a quick thanks to everyone. Thanks to this site I was able to make an informed choice ![]() I considered Pocketbook and Cool-er very carefully, and I'm confident that I have finally worked out the one that's best for me. Now I just have to wait until Feb to go and pick it up from the UK - no 600s in Belgium and certainly none in red. Happy Christmas to me! |

It'll be well read - actually I hadn't thought of that, nice. : )
Your avatar always makes me think of fish skin, very intriguing. Thanks for good wishes. Now to glut myself on Youtube reviews since I can't get my paws on the reader until Feb, grrrrrr - had to send it to parents in the UK due to very odd Sony distribution. |

Accessories
Welcome to the club. Just a few points.
1) Get a cover. Not so much for protection as for comfort. I like to put my feet up, lean back, and read. I have the Sony cover and it makes it much more comfortable to hold and read, as well as looking great. 2) The sony software is REALY badly designed. If you use it you should create a folder where you will put all of the books that will be on your reader. The reason is that if you move the book file later the software can't find it to syncretize with the reader. Hours later you will wonder whats wrong because it will STILL say Syncretizing.... 3) Calibre is a free program that will do much more than the Sony software. Unfortunately there is a somewhat common problem, even on new computers, that prevents it from recognizing the Sony reader for transfers. This is only with MS Windows computers. 4) Drag and drop. This works well, however both the Sony software and Calibre lets you create folders. A big plus! 5) In dim light, just increase the font size. 6) There are lots of options for free and low price ebooks. Look around this site and you will find many of them. Because of that, and the many sales mentioned here, I'm reading more than ever. Again, welcome. |

reddog (started by abbreviating you to Horrid but that sounded rude!), thanks for advice.
i've had some very helpful responses in my thread on loading content, which echo yours - good to see everyone is on the same wavelength. I'm getting the reader to use public domain site almost entirely, I love Gutenburg and Manybooks and struggled to read their books on an early iPod (Dickens on a tiny screen), now I have finally decided to get a dedicated reader. I'm soooo pleased. By the way, if I do drag and drop can I organise books on the Reader, or is it like iTunes in that you do all the organisation on the computer? And if I have some texts in Adobe digital library and others in Calibre, how does that look on the reader? Many thanks |

With the 300 you can not organize the books from the reader. You have something called collections, and they are grouped by "tags". In Calibre (I don't use Sony's software) you can edit the books and create different tags for the books - Classics, Thriller, NonFiction etc... Then when you start the reader you can view your collection by Title, Author or Collection. I believe the 600 is the same way.
As far as Adobe or Calibre having the books, the reader makes no differentiation at all. It doesn't care how the books got there and they all appear together. Hope this helps. |

Thanks very much RonF - but I guess I have to chose between the Adobe or Calibre software. Or can I load from both? Curious because I see Adobe digital library doesn't recognise .lrf and I've started to load stuff into the Adobe library.
Much of this will become apparent when I get my hands on the reader itself. Thanks for your patience : ) |

Congrats, I know you will get a lot of use from it.
You need BOTH Adobe Digital and Calibre. You need Adobe to use the DRM books, you have to authorize your computer and reader. Calibre will be your main program. Its great for organizing and converting. You could go ahead and get both now (free of course) and get a lot of it set up before the reader arrives. Enjoy! |

And purchase a Playstation Portable charger! Charging is much quicker, and you can read while it charges, unlike charging from USB.

Thanks Chainring for the charger advice, that as on my mind a little because I have seen all the posts on charging/battery life and so on.
So, I'm buying in the UK for use in Europe (i'm such a tech pigmy and have no doubt this is a dumb question), do I just go to an electronics shop in Belgium and by a PSP ( thanks for writing it in full, now I know what the abbrev stands for!!!), charger? And there are no probs re compatibility, does it need to be a sony PSP charger (or am I being very ignorant and perhaps only Sony makes them - ohh boy!!!) Thanks Bremen I was playing with Calibre until late late late and now have 140 books loaded. What excellent software and such a good info vid. I have learned, from iTunes experience, how good it is to be quite organised from the start. I'm having a blast, an insomniac's dream!! Thanks everyone |
