Digital Editions on Mac?

Hi all.

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere - couldnt find it.

I have a couple of customers who have the latest version of the cursed ADE installed on their mac's, but they are unable to download pdf/epub books from our site.
This appears to be a Mac only issue and I'd appreciate if anyone who has been through this before could help me sort this out.

I've gone through the ususal pop-up, authorisation problems etc but nothing seems to resolve the issue.

Sample response from customer - "I have the latest version of Digital Editions and I also tried the 'Save As' option, however this saves a copy of the web page you get when you click the link - "Your book is now downloading". Then I get the error saying there is a problem. I've tried firefox as well as safari"

Thanks in advance!

There's a free ebook of choice for anyone that sorts this for me!

I can try this for you this evening. I have ADE (1.7.1) installed on my MacBook Pro, and have downloaded from Waterstones, WH Smith, and Books on Board through it.

Well, the "Save As" option under the file menu, at least in the Safari browser, is going to save a copy of the web page, so that's no surprise. I rather suspect that the "Download Linked File As..." that you get when you either right click or control click the link would be the correct solution. It worked for me with the books you give for free in return for signing up for the newsletter. I'm running on a Mac, Snow Leopard OS-X, and I've authorized a PRS-900 on it, and I've got the latest version of ADE (1.7.2) installed and running.

Yes, the way it has worked for me has been that a ACSM file is downloaded, double clicking on that launches ADE which then downloads the actual book.

I simply click on the link - the ACSM file will go to the Downloads folder.

As noted it's a problem with going and finding the .acsm file and opening it (in ADE or Sony EBL) afterwards. From the ADE Release Notes
Quote:
5. Safari has been designed to protect users from unsafe files and plugins. While files known by Safari to be safer are automatically opened, the acsm files that Digital Editions uses are not known by Safari, which will download the files but not launch them. To override this you must specifically tell Safari that acsm files are "safe" by creating/modifying your Mac's com.apple.DownloadAssessment.plist file. For a discussion of this well known Safari issue see the following blog posts:

* http://mymacinations.com/2008/02/06/...ml-files-safe/
* http://www.davinian.com/os-x-leopard...nt-to-open-it/

Users may encounter similar issues with other browsers, depending on their security settings.

I did none of the steps outlined in Jims post - I just navigate to the Downloads folder in Finder and double click on the ACSM file. A couple of extra steps, but I don't buy that many books, well OK, I buy quite a few, lots even. I guess I am just used to there being several steps from purchase to getting the book to where I want it.
