Broken Gen3
My Gen3 had been gathering dust so I decided to let my nearly 12yo DD use it to read A Christmas Carol (thanks to Harry T). She's been very careful and last night when she turned it on it was not working correctly. As you can see from the attached pictures it looks like the display controller.
I've contacted Bookeen to see about the cost of repairs but since it's out of warranty I'm afraid it won't be repaired. |

Agreed - definitely a controller fault rather than a broken screen. Bookeen have been pretty good about repairing this kind of thing free of charge, even when it is out of warranty - with a bit of luck, all you'll have to pay is the postage.
Please let us know the outcome! |

Hey, when you have two kids....
Actually, I worked at a research laboratory and my job was to test various items, often to failure. |

Heard back from Bookeen today. They tentatively agree with my assessment that it's the display controller. The email goes on to state that if the display has to be replaced then it will cost 100€. Would the entire display need to be replaced for a bad chip?
Is it worth it to ask them to flash the new firmware? |

The "display controller" is not a CHIP on the mainboard, but something embedded in the screen itself

So you do know that the PVI6001A is the display controller chip... That wasn't how I interpreted your earlier post:

But what a lot of people discuss as "display controller" are NOT the display controller (ie Epson S1D13521 or PVI6001A) but some gate array that are defective, or the ribon, on the screen.
The gates array that are on the screen are also known as "display controller", since you seems to have some board & screen look at the border of the screen, you will see small white rectangles in the white borders, THEY are the "display controller" |

It's still cheaper than new. I sent my broken Gen 3 off to Bookeen Dec 3 so I have to wait.

With shipping it's costing me 125€, 25€ just for shipping. Too bad that it only cost me a little over 6€ to ship it Bookeen but my price didn't include tracking and they're shipping it back FedEx which is pretty pricey but has tracking.
My Gen3 will also have the new firmware flashed to it after the screen is replaced so that's a plus. |

Bookeen could've used their postal service, it's bound to be cheaper. If I had sent the Gen3 via Fedex to them it would've been around 25€ because Fedex (and UPS) are premium albeit expensive services. That's why I ship overseas via the post office even the option that includes tracking is usually half of Fedex or UPS. I ship around a dozen packages overseas every week for my business so I know how expensive it is to ship to Europe. What's really nuts is that I can ship cheaper to Australia or the Far East cheaper than I can to Europe.
