Insiders guide to the wireless future

Around 1998, the computer was a commonplace item, but e-mail and the web was just getting started. Who could have imagined that almost everyone was going to be connected by the web, and that Google would make it the first place to look for information?

Business 2.0 says that we are on the verge of something new. We are connected at home, but soon we will be connected everywhere. (Consider the Treo 700p, for example, as a good start!) Wireless cell carriers, Wi-fi, Wi-Max and similar technologies promise to bring us an always connected mobile world.

"It's hard to get excited by the technology as it exists now," says James Enck, an analyst at Daiwa Securities SMBC Europe. "But when you look at everything that's happening, it starts to get really interesting."

Check out the full article to find links that give examples of some of the technologies that they consider to be revolutionary (but are already old hat to some of us bleeding edge guys and gals!):

* Productivity: The everywhere office
* Voice communication gets more flexible
* Beyond the map: Services that fit where you are
* Entertainment: Mobilizing the buddy list
* Tomorrow's wireless devices

Tell that to all the people in rural areas still struggling with 22kbps dialup (yea, like anybody actually achieved 56 kbps throughput).

Seriously though, I always love the pundits who seem to assume that the technology experience they have in the city is world-wide; broadband penetration of < 60% is not what I would call "everywhere"; if you happen to live in South Korea or Sweden this future may apply to you, but as long as the telcos keep their stranglehold on communications it won't happen in America.

Well, I had the change to play with wireless broadband Internet on a commercial long-haul flight, and ever since, I know what it means to be truly connected no matter where you are. It's definitely great. But do I need? I don't know, right now, most of my time I am connected through wired LAN even though my notebook has WiFi-builtin. Why? Because I found my home LAN to be more reliable, faster, and without a hint of radiation Then also, my PDA has WiFi built-in. But to tell you the truth, I hardly use. When I need to up- or download, I usually use the cradle and thanks to Softick Card Export, I can use it just like any other USB mass storage device.

To make it short, I think while we are definitely heading towards a wireless future, I could just as well survive without it (at least for some time).

Just to add my experience. Spent the weekend in Perth, Australia last week. Free wireless is available in the city, a small city mind you. But I never managed to make use, probably because I was trying from my 17th floor hotel room. Anyway, resorted to dial up (didn't want to spend A$15 an hour on their broadband/MagicLink, just to check on my mail). After my built-in V.90 capable modem did the buzzing and whistling, it was 28.8! Wow, haven't seen that connection speed in ages. But then I remember it's not only the modem that counts, but how it connects via the phone PABX wiring system as well.

So you're right, we really have a sizeable number of user's still having to struggle with 28.8 speed in this world.

Well ... kudos to the many hotels in US that offer free internet access! ... Also to ABQ Sunport Airport in NM. They have free wifi internet access in the flight arrival area that is accessible for non-passengers as well! Noo cheers for T-Mobile's strangle hold on wifi access in SFO and I think LAX! grrrr
