Memory Card Questions

Does it work better with an SD card or a Sony Pro Duo card? Can you use both at the same time and if so, does that mean you can have 32 GB extra memory? I see that there's class 6 memory cards, do Pro Duos go that high?

The first question you should ask yourself is whether you need a memory card. The internal memory holds hundreds of books, and you'll probably find the library scan time to be prohibitive if you have so many books on the device that you require a memory card.

Is there any reason for a memory card other than putting more books on it?

MP3 files? But the Sony is such a lousy MP3 player that you'll soon get fed up of that.

okay then, I won't worry about those at this point then. The only real reason I want the Sony anyway is for reading, I figure an MP3 player is better for music to begin with. Thanks!

I use a Pro Duo card when I want to read PDF journal articles quickly. Instead of getting out my USB cable and hooking up my reader, I just pop the card out of my 600 and into my laptop (it has a built-in reader), transfer the file over, and pop it back in to my Sony. I plug in my reader to do more extensive file management. Also, some of the files I read can be up to 5 MB (graphics embedded), so the 500 MB of built-in memory does not go as far as it does with pure text files.

I am sure books running off the SD card seem a little slower on the page turns. So, for me, I would rather have my books directly on the reader and not on a card at all.

I wasn't going to bother with memory cards in the reader. However I was having problems loading some of my library books on to the sony as they kept on coming up with a Protected Page error and I couldn't read them. I resolved this by putting an SD card into the reader and transferring the library books in Adobe Digital Editions straight onto the card. Now they work! Why this should be I don't know but it works so I'm not knocking it

I've had my PRS-600 for a few days now. One feature that I wish Sony would put in is a transfer from memory card to main memory option. I like to transfer books onto a memory card first and just put it into my reader for a couple of reasons. One, it's very convenient; I don’t have to look for my USB cable. Two, I’m a bit anal about recharge cycles. I always wonder if I’m decreasing my battery lifespan by the repeated plugging in the reader and having that short charge time when I’m transferring books over to it. Does it count as a charge cycle? It’s probably just a slight wear and tear on the battery, but I get paranoid about it.

My class 4 SDHC seems faster the memory pro duo and is cheaper too! Can imagine that a class 6 would even be faster. But the best as mentioned is just to use the internal memory (page turns and bookmarking become a lot faster). Now all books are on internal memory and only music on memory pro duo. My class 4 SDHC is now used for my iriver story, also for music files. I just directly transfer to the internal memory via usb but it keeps getting the extra charge time everytime it is connected...

But how can I tell how much memory is free in the internal memory? I can't seem to find anything about that in the manual or from the reader itself....

Thx.

if you're going to do a memory card, get a SD card.. you'll be able to use it in far more devices than a memory stick.. a camera.. mp3 player.. laptop.. desktop.. memory sticks are a sony thing and mainly present in sony devices..
