How long to wait for initial power up?

Just purchased the PRS-600. Instructions say to plug into USB port and wait until the battery has enough of a charge and then it will come to life.

I have had mine plugged in for nearly 90 minutes now and it is still dead.. no lights, no display saying 'USB connection", nothing.

How long did others have to wait for the initial 'out of the box' wake up charge?

I believe you need to have the Sony Library running to have the reader charge - at least that's how it works on my laptop.

- Reader plugged in but no library software running = no light, no charge

- Reader plugged in with library software running = light, charging

Hope this helps

Try restarting the computer with the reader connected, then open the software

When I first plugged mine, the autorun window popped up with an option to install the software. If yours doesn't, I guess the battery is really really dead.

You can go here to download the software :

http://ebookstore.sony.com/download/

After the installation, start the software and plug in your reader, the light on it should come on, and then after about 45 mins the reader should awake itself.

tried everything.. no go. My unit is simply DOA.
Not a very good impression of Sony right out of the box

The only three other things I can think about is to switch USB ports (if you haven't done so yet, which I'm sure you did try) and, if possible, to try it on another computer.

And if you happen to own a PSP (or know someone who does), the charger will work with the Reader, that would be another mean to try and charge the battery back up (if the battery's charge is the problem in the first place).

Otherwise I agree with you that it sounds DOA, however maybe someone here experienced the same problem and fixed it and will find this thread too.

Sorry that I couldn't help you fix your problem and I hope you'll get it (or a replacement) to work

For me at least, this is not the case. Both my server (which is on 24/7, making it an ideal charging station ) as well as my workstation do not have the Sony Library software installed (I once installed it on my workstation, but seeing how badly it was written quickly decided to abandon it) yet the reader charges from it nonetheless.

I have also tried using a Wallsocket-to-USB converter (designed for an iPod touch - oh the irony), that however did not work. I guess the reader does need some kind of OK signal, but for me at least EBL is not required (luckily).

Sounds like DOA unfortunately (since the indicator light isn't working)...for me I do not need to have the EBL software running to have the readers charge. Also I fond that I usually have installed software first and then connected reader to machine.

Ah, thank you for the clarification. My (wrong) assumption came from the fact that, like you, I did try to charge my Reader from an iPod Touch Wall Charger with no luck. The only difference I could think of between the charger and the computer was the software - I couldn't remember exactly if the Reader started charging on the go when I plugged it first or after I installed the software, which I did immediately in my excitement

I'm pretty sure now, after having 2 confirmations, that the Reader would indeed charge on my laptop w/o the software running ; but I would need to disable the autorun feature of the software to try it out, when the Reader gets plugged in!

Sorry for any confusion

FYI - the cube for the ipod WILL work to charge, but only with the PSP / reader ROUND tip. The mini USB will charge / transfer only from the computer. I have a Gomadic retractable cord and tip (round with yellow end) that does work with the ipod cube. The mini USB cord will not work with the ipod cube.

I'm not really sure about this, but it might be the reader is too dead to be charged from the computer, but once it is charge from a wall charger it should be okay with the computer. Seems like I read that somewhere, sometime.

Hope that helps.

The charging seems really quirky. Mine won't charge from the OSX machine at all, whether the sony software running is not. It will charge from the linux machine, but *only* if calibre is running when it is plugged in. It won't charge from purpose built USB chargers, and it won't charge using a psp->usb charge cable.

My Sony charges no problem from a Mac without any software running, but only from a high power USB port (i.e. in my case I have to plug it into the ports on the computer, not the ones on the keyboard).

Leave it plugged in for a couple of hours and make sure you disable automatic sleep/shut down. If the battery is completely flat, it might take as long just to see the charging light. No extra software installation should be necessary, but do use a main USB port (e.g. one at the back of the PC), not from a hub/keyboard.
Another (better) choice is to use a PSP charger (with round plug). In that case you should see the red charging light immediately.
However, it is pretty unlikely that a newly purchased unit would have a flat battery, so it does look like your device is defective...

First the computer has to be on. The computer has to recognize the device, this may require a reboot. A USB expansion hub or connector may not be sufficiently powered. If the battery sat around long enough it may be too low to be seen by the computer.

In that case a charger that plugs into the wall and connects to the yellow round plug is what is required.

A Play Station Portable (PSP) charger should work fine.

Any 5vdc charger with a compatible tip having the (-) negative on the outside and the (+) positive on the inside should also work.

Anyway it goes there is no charging going on until the red light is lit.

Good Luck.
