Hello there.

I have been loitering round these parts for a few weeks and am now finally taking the plunge and dipping my toe into these forum waters. I do not currently own an ebook reader, but am planning to 'receive' one for Christmas. Inevitably I stumbled upon the mobileread forums in my quest for the relevant knowledge required to make an informed decision as to which device to plump for. The one thing that this quest has impressed upon me the most is the vast number of devices that are actually out there.

When I first came across these forums, I had in mind a Sony prs-600. In fact, I still have this in mind. I think what appeals to me the most is the ability to annotate and take notes. In my everyday reading (mainly fiction, biographies, popular science and the odd textbook) I always have a piece of paper as a bookmark on which I am forever writing down words I don't know, bookmarking paragraphs or sentences I love etc. So to be able to do this electronically would be absolutely integral to my ereading experience.

I have already downloaded Calibre and have about 300 books in my library, primarily free content from googlebooks, project Gutenberg and the like. I would be very interested to know whether the bundled Sony software is actually any better than Calibre and also whether Calibre will be able upload my annotations and notes, though I imagine these question would be better posted in the relevant forums in due course.

Essentially, like so many people who use these forums, I just love reading. I have so many books and so little space that the very idea of being able to store thousands of books on something that is roughly the same size as one book fills me with enormous excitement, and a profound sense of the luck we all share in being alive today when such things are becoming a reality.

So hello everybody! I hope to become an active member of your community in the coming weeks and months.

Hi Lambs_Bread and welcome to MobileRead. I've had a Sony 505 since Jan 08 and really like it. Most members here will tell you Calibre is superior to the bundled Sony software.

And you are so right about the portability an eBook reader gives you. I especially like it when I'm traveling or on vacation. For example, we're going to South America in late December and I plan to download and read the new Steven King book. I saw it in the bookstore yesterday and the thing is HUGE. It's 1000 pages and must weight close to three pounds but it won't take up much space on my reader.

There is a nail and a head involved there somewhere. I am one of those people that will take 5 books away with me for one week, despite only having the time to read about 30 pages! It is all about the choice. As for big books, I think my first ebook will be probably be 'War and Peace' which I have been wanting to read for ages, and is essentially free and weightless in this Brave New World in which we find ourselves.
