PRS-650 Question about usage

Hello~!

Got my first real eReader the other day. A 650, so far i'm loving it and thanks to this forum (and Geppetto especially) for the advice of which reader to get (was thinking of a iRiver Story first).

I have a quite newbie question regarding usage. It might have been answered alot of times before, I apologise if that is the case. But what is the prefered usage of turning it on and off for optimal battery life?

Is letting it go to sleep mode better than turning it on and off? Is sleep mode better if say i'll use it again in an hour? Is even sleep mode better if i'm done using it for the day?

So far i've turned it on and off as it's the basic common way i'm used to electronics. Any advice or storys of how you use your Sony Reader would be helpful! Thanks.

Kurt, most of us put our sony's into sleep mode rather than turning it off. It shouldn't use anymore additional memory, as battery is only used when changing the screen.

Also you say you've been turning it on & off but have you? If you use the on/off switch, it puts the reader to sleep when sliding to off unless you are sliding to off, and holding it right over until you geta message asking if you wish to shutdown...

Sleep uses the same amount of power as on; virtually none.

I always put mine in sleep mode to prevent inadvertent page turns. I used to lay my reading glasses down on the reader only to come back and find that the pages started turning on their own until I'm back at the beginning of the book. That is the one thing I don't like about the touchscreen.

Used to power off only when not using the next 2+ days. Otherwise sleep mode is more convenient.

I use sleep mode as well. Only if I know I'm not going to use for several days will I turn it off (i.e. which amounts to basically never).

I wonder what the actual difference is between sleep and power off? Power off has no standby screen, just a blank white screen, but there's no "burn in" for an e-ink screen (right?). Any other differences?

Sleep mode turns off the IR touchscreen interface which does consume power. Also, all these e-readers have a background processor power draw (unlike the screen itself which draws no power) that will discharge the battery in less than a month (varies by device, not sure for the 650). If turned off completely the battery will drain much more slowly. Does it matter? IMO, only if you're camping or otherwise away from power for weeks at a time.

I only use the sleep mode and I think that's fine as long as I can charge it every week or so depending on how many pages I read.

I've been turning it off thru the options and power down.

Seems like everybody is using the sleep mode option. I guess I can do the same when i'm using it every day

If anything else, I don't have to wait for it to boot up.

Which is what it'll do itself too!

I never turn off my devices, I only let them sleep.

The only time I have ever turned mine off completely was when I tested power off (shutdown):

HOME > Settings > Device Shutdown > Yes/No

Sleep mode for me! I use my reader regularly, and although I don't have any facts on which to base this on, I assume that when the 650 is totally powered down, it takes quite a bit of power to fully reboot. So any minimal battery savings from powering down rather than sleeping the 650 would be used up with the reboot process.

I shut it down at night. I also shut it down to fix any issues.

I have had a 650 for a week and am very happy with it even though the pdf support is not all I had wished.
I have a question to power off. Like boxcorner I use the software power off solution.
Is there any difference between using the slide to power down and the software solution? In the manual I cannot find mention of the software option and all reference to power down is using the slide.

I'm not aware of any fundamental difference, except that the slide switch is dual-function. This dual functionality is described on page 8

User Guide > Chapter 1 > Getting Started > [1] Power Switch

The software option is mentioned, albeit briefly, on page 89

User Guide > Chapter 2 > Changing Settings > Device Shutdown

BTW - There's a typo on page 97 (charg instead of charge).
