registering 600 without using Sony library software
Hi - a simple question this time
![]() When I connect the reader for the first time I guess I'll be prompted to register it which I'll want to do to keep the firmware up to date. Can I do that without loading the Sony library software? I'm hearing bad stuff about stability of that programme so I want to steer clear, not being able or wanting to buy from the Sony bookstore. So can I register the device without having to load the software? and do you get prompted automatically to register? Thanks - I'd like to know before I hit the wrong key and end up stuck because I'd be hopeless at getting out of a glitch. ![]() Cheers |

You can authorize your reader using Adobe Digital Editions if you don't want to use the sony software. Authorizing it makes it able to read drm'ed books.
However, I think the only way to update the firmware is through the sony software. If there is any other way, I would be very interested to hear it. No reason why you shouldn't install the sony software and never use it. That's what I've done at least. |

Thanks omk3 - But I have seen a thread (somewhere) that the Sony library software opens as default once loaded.
What I'd like to do is keep my Reader up to date with the firmware but (so I'll need to register), other than that I'll have nothing to do with the software or the store. I guess it depends on if the device comes with a CD to load, or, if when you first plug it in, it goes directly to the Sony site, where you can pick and choose what you want to access. Thanks |

When you install Reader Library, it does ask you (during the install) if you want it to be the default. So you can install Reader Library without it taking over from ADE.

The software is inside the reader itself, and tried to install when you first plug it in. If you disable autorun (search this forum for ways to do that), you will have no problem with the software just being on your computer for when you might need it.

Thanks guys, so if I choose not to make the Reader Library the default software at installation is that the same as 'disabling autorun'? Is 'autorun' another way of saying 'default'?
Sorry if I'm being slow......slow.......slow |

there is no need to "register" the device to be able to get and install the updates.
I assume you mean "register" in the sense of telling Sony that you are the owner of the device. BOb |

Default means that it will let adobe digital editions handle drm epub files, for example
Autorun means the program starts automatically whenever the reader is plugged in. There are ways to avoid this. Bob, I assume the op actually means "authorize". Anyway, is there a way to update the firmware without using the sony software at all? |

Hi Bob, this thread is running a bit in parallel with Dave's.
Yup, register meaning, do what I do to have the device recognised by the website so that I can download updates. Then again, as I said in the other thread, perhaps updates aren't really an issue? I'm coming from an iPod/Apple background where updates are useful. Perhaps I can just go ahead and ignore all the software from Sony, and any updates, and just use the reader with Calibre and the occasional stripped drm book done in ADE. I have downloaded both ADE and Calibre and like them both. Thanks for advice - all very gratefully received! |

There's no registration as such. You plug in your reader, the software recognizes it, then checks online for updates. That's all.
Really you shouldn't worry so much about it. Updates are not frequent, but they are certainly good to have. Not that you can't survive without them, but still. |

Hokay, thanks. Just reading about all the glitches when using the Sony library software and running Calibre causing the Reader to crash had me worried.

What you will want to do is run msconfig and under the startup tab, uncheck Reader Library. This will stop Reader Library Launcher from starting when you reboot. |
