All of the e-ink readers (Sony, Kindle, Aztak, Hanlin, etc.) have the same basic display. It's not bright, because e-ink doesn't emit any light; it's opaque, like a printed book.

Some e-ink readers *look* brighter than others, depending on the surrounding color. But they're all using the same kind of screen. The earliest ones (over a year ago) were a bit greyer than the ones available now, but if you've seen the newer Sonys, you've seen the screens in use on all the other e-ink readers currently being sold.

The only way to get "brightness" is to use an LCD screen, which (1) is hard on the eyes and (2) eats battery quickly.

Welcome Steve. The 600 has a touchscreen which reduced the contrast slightly. The Sony 505 is the same eink display but without the extra layer so has a bit better contrast. (as does the 300 in a 5" screen). The Kindle2 and Kindle International have the same 6" screen and no touchscreen layer either.
