ALP just a piece of a bigger picture for ACCESS

ACCESS, the parent company of PalmSource, initiated the acquisition of another US software company this week, shedding some interesting new light on their business strategy. IP Infusion develops network switching and routing software that ACCESS says they plan to incorporate into a product called NetFront Home Gateway Server. It's all a little vague at the moment (ACCESS doesn't seem to have a flair for marketing announcements, sorry to say) but they're calling it a "ubiquitous connectivity platform" that appears to be designed to give you broadband access from a wireless mobile device to anything that is connected to your home wireless network. Streaming media, games, music, documents on your home PC, or even remote control interfaces to home appliances might all be accessible from your cellphone or other wireless device. VOIP is part of the picture, too.

As ambitious as taking on Microsoft and Symbian with their new ACCESS Linux Platform might be, it seems that it's only one part of a larger vision for integrating mobile and home technology.

More info and analysis here.

I just noticed that both ACCESS and PalmSource have updated the banners on their web sites to read "Together, ACCESS and PalmSource will deliver next generation software solutions for a variety of markets, including mobile devices and phones, home media, and automotive telematics."

Interesting times, these!

For those of you that don't know what "automotive telematics" means any more than me, here's a couple of links...
* http://www.automotive-telematics.com/ says "Put simply, telematics is the transmission of useful information (data) to and from a vehicle, and in our modern hi-tech digital world, it's an industry that's mushrooming."
* http://www.mindbranch.com/products/R601-11.html calls it "bringing the Internet into the car," which is still a broad concept, but must be close to what Access has in mind.

Sounds like they want to be tied into cars, homes, various mobile internet providers like cell phone carriers or wiMax, as well as all kinds of information and media connectivity. Oh yeah, VOIP also. And from their diagram, they must want things like home control and monitoring also.

It's a big picture that's really really, well, BIG!

Personally, I'd just like to be able to see on my smartphone if I left my garage door open or not. I never seem to leave it open, but I often backtrack because I'm not sure!
