MS Reader Activation problem

I've recently replaced my PC and needed to install MS Reader again on the new machine. I've done that and gone through the activation process getting the reply "Activation files have been succesfully downoaded and installed" but still reader won't let me read any of me ebooks that I have been reading on the previous machine " "This copy of MS Reader cannot open this file try reactivating".
Any suggestions? (I have of course tried re-activating but no joy)

First, are you sure you activated with the same login and password as on the old machine and if you have Vista did you follow the Vista activation link on the MS Reader download/activation site?

If so I would contact MS online support. I was having problems activating with Vista and they were very helpful. I had to open an online ticket and get referred twice but finally got referred to the MS Reader support team and they called me and worked until we got it resolved. I was impressed at the level of support for a free application.

Thanks for the reply.

Possibly not (It was so long ago that I installed it on the old machine that I really can't remember. but why would that be necessary? This is a new installation on a new machine. The activation process made no mention of a password and the 'Passport' seemed happy enough

It would be necessary so the eBooks you have already be able to be decrypted. The key you used in the past is not the key you've used now. So unless the new install is using the same key, it won't work with the old eBooks. However, if you can redownload thr eBooks with the new computer, they should work fine.

I'm getting absolutely nowhere with this. I can't redownload any books because it says I need to activate the reader first but I have gone through the activation process and got the message ""Activation files have been succesfully downoaded and installed" (I notice that it doesn't actually say that the reader has been activated, just that the files have been installed. Is that significant?

I was having the same problem with the eHarlequin site not recognizing that I had an activated copy of MS reader on my old PC. I just downloaded new books on my work PC and then was able to email them to home. When that PC crashed I got a new netbook and now everthing is working OK.

If you still have access to your old PC you could download convertlit.gui and decrypt your old files on that machine and then transfer the freed files to your new PC.

If you are trying to download a new MS Reader file for the first time to the new PC and it still won't work I would contact Microsoft support.

I had the same problem and I contacted Microsoft support. This is what they told me.
To resolve this issue we have two methods.

Method 1.

Please contact the E-books vendor from which you have purchased the E-books and provide them the list of E-books you have purchased and request them to provide you the Old Passport ID __ with which you have purchased those E-books. If they have the information about your Old Passport ID in their database then they will be glad to provide you the Old Passport ID. Then using the Old Passport ID, you could activate the Reader installed on your computer and would be able to download the E-books.

Method 2.

If the vendor is unable to provide you the Old Passport ID. Then the only option is to use the new Passport ID __. Please contact the E-books vendor and provide them the new Passport ID ___ and request them to transfer the association of the E-books you have purchased using the Old Passport ID __ to the New Passport ID ____.

I contacted BooksonBoard and they could not reset my books, nor could they tell me what my old information was. Fictionwise and eharlequin reset my books so I could download them again.

Freeing your LIT books is probably the easiest option.
