How is battery life affected by turn off method
The Sony 600 has two ways that you can turn it off. If you momentarily move the power switch to the right and release it, the unit will immediately turn off. I assume that this is a "standby" mode. Sliding the power switch again will turn the unit on immediately and return you to where you last were.
The other method is to move the power switch to the right and hold it there until you get the shutdown warning. If you choose 'yes', the unit will turn off. When you turn it back on it takes much longer to start up and eventually ends up at the Home screen. My question to the group is: What is the difference in battery drain between the two methods when the unit is off. I've noticed that, if use the standby turn off, the battery seems to drain more that I would expect from just reading and flipping pages. I've been using this mode overnight and wheneverr I'm not reading. The battery seems to drain much faster than the 7500 page turns that Sony claims. I have not run any controlled tests with each method and was wondering if any of you have made such a comparison? I'd like to know that I can take a short trip where I'll be doing some reading and not have to take my notebook along or buy a charge adaptor to recharge the unit. If using the compete turnoff method makes a significant difference in battery life, that's what I'll do Any thoughts? Dave W |

Even without the full shutdown my 700 lasts for 3 weeks or so, which includes reading a good 200-300 pageturns each day. I was suprised at how many more pageturns I got after getting the Low Battery warning, I just tapped 'ok' on startup and continued reading. If it does get that low, with power management on in the settings, it'll fully turn off, so the turning on takes a bit longer.

I haven't tried using the 600 until it actually shuts down. I've gone to one bar remaining and then recharged it. I don't want to have it turn off in the middle of reading a book that I'm really absorbed in. At the point where the battery dropped to last bar, I had read about 1200 pages which isn't enough to satisfy me on a trip. However, if, as you say, there is a lot of juice left before it actually turns itself off, perhaps it isn't as bad as I think.
I still wonder whether using the full shutdown after reading will give appreciably more battery life. Dave W |

I am curious about this, too. I only get about seven or eight days before it is down to one bar. I don't fully turn off my reader, but I swipe to turn pages.
I keep meaning to try for a week just using the buttons to turn the page, but I keep forgetting and find myself using the touch screen. I read mostly novels and use the dictionary maybe once or twice a day. Maybe someday I can do a more controlled test to compare how much more battery is used when you swipe to turn pages vs. using the buttons. |

I haven't been reading with my 600 long enough to form any conclusions on battery life, but I don't do a full shutdown - just put it to sleep. I like the near instant start up when I resume reading.
So far, I've been turning pages with both buttons and swipes - whichever feels best as I'm holding the reader at the time. I have even caught myself reaching for the upper right corner of the page to turn it like I do with a pbook. I love the flexibility of not having to shift my grip just to hit a button. sahmad88: I'd like to see that study. |

If you use full shutdown, the device then takes longer to boot up. IME any battery savings from shutdown are used up in that longer boot sequence. I only use shutdown mode if it's going to be a week or more before I turn the Reader back on.
And no I have no scientific data, this is all IMO. |
