You can read some PDFs on your Mac without needing any extra software. For other formats you'll need other software - for example Adobe Digital Editions for Secure PDFs,

There is a list of software for reading eBooks in the MobileRead Wiki, which is accessible at the top of each page. Most software to read eBooks on computers is free. Below is a shortcut to reading software in the wiki. I'm not sure what your PowerBook operating system is, but if it's OS-X there is a section for it.
