Palm Treo 700w is here

It's been a long time coming, but Palm has finally started sales of its Windows Mobile-based Palm Treo 700w that prognosticators, clairvoyants, and kooks have been anticipating for months. Important links to check out:

David Pogue, technology writer for the New York Times, has a great article on the Treo 700W entitled A Marriage Not Made in Heaven. He points to all of the good things that make the Treo a Treo: Great form factor, excellent keyboard, Palm's focus on usability, etc. He also zeros in on things that take away from the Treo and Palm experience, all due to the 700W running Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0:

Quote:
Alas, even after all that plastic surgery, you can't escape the fact that you're basically running Windows.

For instance, you open programs from a tiny Start menu, which you activate by pressing a dedicated Windows-logo key. Fine, except that the Start menu has room to list only seven programs. For access to anything else, you must open the Programs folder. But even here, only nine icons fit on each screen, and no list view is available. So you have to do a lot of scrolling.
Windows Mobile's memory management (or lack thereof), poor usability and increased keypresses/screen taps, counterintuitive "OK" button, and lack of on-screen mute & speakerphone soft buttons during calls (now hidden away in menus) are other notable criticisms.

I'm just interested to see what happens to the price point of the 650.

The 700w was also addressed in Gates' keynote speech:

"Another thing we're committed to is Windows Mobile .. 93 operators in 55 countries ... This one you've probably heard about - it's our partnership with Palm. This phone is amazing for single-hand operation. Based on the experience they had, they brought that to the Windows Mobile platform. This is on sale, starting tomorrow, ahead of schedule. They got approval from Verizion (EV-DO). Any sort of attachments, images, will be fantastic because of the bandwidth."

Actually, I just looked, and in my area (DC), it's $150 from Sprint. That's half of what it was like 6 months ago. Verizon and Cingular are still at $200.

Not bad... If I needed a new phone I might be inclined.

Who would've ever thought of Microsoft advertising for Palm products?

I asked this in another post, but I'll plug it in here in the hope that someone can lend some insight. I just bought a Treo 700w to replace a Qtek 9100 that died after 32 days! Anyway, I've owned a 650 and looked forward to Win Mobile 5.0 to be better compatible w/ my notebook (Dell M20). Everything seems to be working fine except for one little glitch. It is set up to sync with my Exchange server and does it quite well. However, on the device, I went to Outlook Email/menu/tools/options, wanting to add a signature to my emails and found that "Outlook Mail" isn't one of the options in the box preceded by "tap an account to change settings"! It has Text Message, MMS, and VZAvenue (a pop3 account I also use) as choices...but no mention of Outlook Email, even though it is, in fact, on the device and working fine, synchronizing everything just as it is supposed to, etc. Have I neglected to set something up or select some sort of set-up option somewhere either in ActiveSync on my PC (a Dell M20 notebook) or on the device? If you have an idea, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks.
