hesitantly getting a kindle2
I read a lot and I travel a lot, generally I can pick up a paperback or magazine while traveling and it does the job. However the idea of the e-book. Having everything available in such a small format is intriguing. So with a bit of extra mad money I decided to go ahead and try it out, so I put an order in for the Kindle 2 a few days ago. I am hoping that it is all that it is hyped up to be.

Welcome to the K2 club! I love mine, but if your travels take you outside the U.S., Kindle may not be the best choice. I understand that their wireless is pretty much confined to the mainland. (I could be wrong.) Of course, you could always load up your device before traveling, and even if you don't, you may be able to download books via USB on computer. Not sure how that works out with the 220 Volt 50 Hz that's ubiquitous overseas, however. Can anyone help me out there?

Hello Phil & welcome to MobileRead. I also travel a lot -- in fact, I left my home on the 8th and won't return until sometime around the 4th of October. So, my Kindle & Sony readers are essential and "don't forget" items when I'm packing.
You'll find that Amazon has planned a subscription for newspapers, magazines, and even blogs to be regularly delivered to the Kindle. Sounds like those would easily fit the type of reading that you do. You may also want to check out Calibre -- a program that runs on your computer -- and see how it creates a "book" from an online news source. Some of the users are very happy with that as an alternative to Amazon's subscription services. I haven't used either because I prefer reading novels instead of short stories or articles. We're very glad you've joined us here at MobileRead and hope you'll find any help that you need. We'd like to hear from you once your K2 arrives -- let us know what you think of it, what you're reading, etc. And, be sure to check out the books which have been uploaded to our own "library" at https://www.mobileread.com/forums/ebooks.php Your K2 can read any of the mobipocket format books. |

As for the whispernet -- yes, it's only in the USA, but you don't *need* it except for samples. So, if I decide I need a new book while I'm abroad, I'll buy it from the Amazon web site, download it to my netbook, and then transfer to the Kindle using a USB cable. But, I'm counting on not needing any new books while I'm gone. I have all of this month's freebies and several books I downloaded from here at MobileRead. And I also have a whole list of books I bought from Fictionwise and Baen/Webscriptions. I'm going to run out of vacation money before I run out of stuff to read! |

Welcome, and please remember you have a 30 day unconditional return policy.
If you do not care for it, return it paying only postage. Amazon is great that way. Also, remember their customer support is great...... |
