Getting amazon books off of the iPhone

So I have an iPhone and the kindle app - which, I guess, sort of makes me a kindle owner since I'm now allowed the privilege of purchasing ebooks from amazon that are intended for the kindle reader.

But I also have Stanza for the iPhone, which is a vastly superior ebook reader.

The catch is I'd rather read the books I bought from amazon in stanza, not Amazon's primitive kindle app.

But it seems that not only did amazon initially break the ability to download my ebooks to my PC, they've gone ahead and completely removed the feature from their site.

So here I am with the Kindle app and books I bought, and a reader I want to use, but I can't use the reader I want to read the books I paid for.

So does anyone know how to get amazon ebooks off of the iPhone 3GS? I've tried iPodDownload and iPodExplorer, and iPhone backup explorer - all to no avail.

Note: The (hopefully) good news is, Amazon just yesterday bought Lexcycle and they were alluding to the fact that Stanza would soon be able to read amazon books.

I really hope they don't do anything lame like cripple the software after the acquisition, but I'd still like to be able to backup my purchased books. Because, quite frankly, I don't trust Amazon after they deleted people's purchased books remotely.

If I go to a bookstore and buy a book, the bookstore isn't allowed to mess with it after it's been legally purchased thanks to a little thing called First Sale Doctrine that is often abused by publishers in this digital age.

So I don't think Amazon should suddenly be allowed to violate first sale doctrine just because it's digital. As a result I'd like to protect my purchases from remote tampering by backing them up, as well as format shift them into something more suited to my needs. But I have not yet been able to.

Can anyone help?

Several people have reported good results with backup extractor (search the forum and google). One you have the book on your computer, you will have to strip the drm in order to read it on any other device or reader. You'll have to search the forum for old instructions on how to remove drm as it is against forum policy to provide details.

BTW, you don't "buy" or "own" Kindle books, you lease them. There are many posts and arguments on the subject all over the forums.

They bought it back in April. They have unfortunately made no progress toward allowing kindle books to be read yet.

This argument is the equivalent to expecting not to get in legal trouble for buying prescription medication you don't have a script for. The medicine (kindle books) is legal if you have a prescription (copyright). It can be confiscated in the prescription is forged (pirated kindle book put online by non-authorized vendor).
I personally think Amazon did their LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY by removing the pirated book. I do believe the refund should have been enacted BY them, it seems several had to request a refund for the removed books.

iPhone Backup Extractor works at iTunes 9 and iPhone 3.1 (that, as you can imagine, is not jailbroken).
