Hello to everyone!
Just wanted to say hello to everyone!
I am a seasoned e-book worm but also a fresh Jetbook owner. After many hours spent reading ebooks on PDAs/handhelds I found I need a dedicated ebook reader. E-ink devices would be OK if not so expensive, so I decided a Jetbook would be just enough for me. Actually, the list of devices I used beforehand is quite long: Handspring Visor Edge (the Jetbook screen reminds me of this particular PDA), Visor Neo, Apple Newton, Siemens Simpad, Palm TX, NEC MP 790, NEC MP 900 and Ipaq HX2415. None of these was good enough: Visor Edge had the most pleasant type of screen, certainly not hard on my eyes, but the screen size was too small. Apple Newton was OK as for the size, but lack of support, limited memory and slow transfer (only serial cable) made me discard it after a short while. Siemens Simpad was very nice, but quite heavy and battery life was not good enough - only about 3-4 hours. The same goes for NEC's (which I used more for writing than reading). All in all, the best so far was Palm TX, which I still use for many purposes, but the screen size was still too small for me. That's, in a nutshell, why I bought a Jetbook. And I feel it will stay with me for a while! |

I am located in Poland and Ectaco's main retailer in Poland is MediaMarkt. Generally I dislike that store, but this time I had no choice (and I also wanted to check prices of some other electronic goods at MM). I spotted a burgundy Jetbook on display. Alas, it wasn't charged, so I had to ask the shop assistant to charge it for me. Which she did after a long while, but seemingly the jetbook didn't want to charge at all. And then she said: "I am a real blonde!" It turned out she'd taken a charger from a different Ectaco device and plugged it into the headphone socket! Then she found the correct charger and I was able to see the Jetbook come to life. I immediately knew that I liked the screen (as said before, it reminds me of Visor Edge screen, which used to be very easy on my eyes). The MM assistant inserted a memory card full of ebooks into the jetbook and I noticed it was quite a nice ebook pack (in fact most of them were the classics offered on jetbook.net site). At that point I was sure I was going to buy the jetbook; the lady said it was the last one, but a moment later changed her mind and said they still had one black jetbook. So I asked for the black one, paid at the checkout and got my jetbook ... only to find the memory card wasn't included with it. So I went back to the assistant and learnt that the card was only a demo which belonged to the display unit; it was not the part of the standard pack. Without much consideration I said I wanted the display unit then, together with the card. As a result I got $10 discount and the memory card full of ebooks and ... a burgundy Jetbook. One more thing: in the package there was a CD with many Ectaco dictionaries. The Palm and PocketPC ones are demos, but all the Windows ones are full copies (about 30 of them!). If you take into account that each of these is worth about $40 (if you buy them from the Ectaco website, elsewhere they can be found cheaper), you might say the Jetbook itself was just a bonus added on top of these dictionaries ![]() I hope I answered your question in enough detail ![]() |

Roughly, $200. MediaMarkt seems to be the only retailer in Poland to offer Jetbooks at this price, others set the price closer to $300.
