PRS-700 - Love it -- but had to troubleshoot already

Hi everyone. I received a Sony PRS-700 for Christmas and I really love it and have already read two books on it since I received it. I find this reader amazing. HOWEVER, last night when I was reading (fully charged), it locked up for some reason and I could not get the main screen back at all. I tried rebooting, tried turning pages, tried plugging it in, etc. I was scared to death after my husband spent all this money on this gift, how was I going to tell him I broke it. Anyway, after very little sleep, I came down and got on the internet and could not find anything to trouble shoot. I hooked it up to my computer and the application did not come up. I had to go into the device itself to the database, click on a book for the application to come up. Still no go on the book and the device did not appear for me to eject. After several frustrating attempts, I disconnected and tried the reader again, magically it worked. I have no idea what fixed it or what happened. Long-story short -- has anyone had this problem, what did you use for a resource, and how did you fix it? thanks, ginger

Hi Ginger,

Actually - ran into the same problem today. I used this post to fix it.

The lockup happened while reading Dorian Gray. I was adding a note to a bookmark - when I switched to symbols mode - locked up. I connected it to my Mac (without rebooting to Windows) - and the USB Connected thing came up. Unplugged it - and voila.

It seems connecting it is the Sony equivalent of ctrl-alt-del. I don't think plugging it to the wall charger helped because the wall charger is a straight pass through - no attempt by the computer to perform a "mind-meld" with the device. Theoretically it is not good to plugin and un-plug a storage device without properly ejecting it - but, I am pretty sure the device doesn't use a platter style drive, and because no information was transferred - we should be good.

(I suppose one could also use the reset button on the back of the device; however, that might reformat the device - which is why didn't try that first.)

Cheers,
Josh

Welcome to MobileRead, Moondaddy!

Whenever my 700 has frozen on me, an overnight charging has helped, usually with a soft reboot (pushing the reset button). If this doesn't help, repost your question in the Sony Portable Reader Forum and I am sure someone will be able to give you some advise. Good Luck!

Happy Reading!
