Hi from Sconnie Botland

Hi Folks,
Found this place while noodling around trying to find info on the Sony 505 my lovely girlfriend bought me for my birthday.Have just had a buying frenzy on ebay of all the bundles of books I liked the look of,so the discovery of Calibre on here will come in handy I think!

Regards,
Ali.

Hi Jock,

Welcome to Mobileread! There are lots of friendly people here for advice and banter.

Be careful with those eBay bundles though - most of them are bootleg versions, with none of the money getting back to the authors.

For out-of-copyright books, look here on Mobileread first - there are thousands, all nicey formatted by Mobileread members.

For in-copyright books, don't give money to bootleggers. There are plenty of free torrents out there if you must rip off the authors. Otherwise, there are publishers and retailers out there who actually give good value to reader and author. (E.g. Baen Books - http://www.webscription.net/ or Smashwords http://www.smashwords.com/ )

Hi All
Thanks for the welcomes and the encouragement! I do have one question-Can anyone help with using calibre please? or point me in the right direction? I've downloaded calibre, and I have a load of ebooks on disk in various formats, all of which can be read by the Sony, but some have really small text so I'd like to convert them all using calibre. My question is,how do I get the books into calibre in order to convert them? I start calibre and then insert the disc but I can't see how to get the contents of the disk into the library in calibre so I can convert them. Can anyone help please? I do freely admit to being a computer numpty!

Regards,
Ali.

Either drag and drop the files onto the Calibre window, or click the small triangle to the right of the "Add books" icon in the top left of the calibre window, and choose "add books from directory" and choose the directory on disk containing the files you want added.

Note that Calibre can't convert DRMed books, but I doubt that your eBay disks have DRMed files on them, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Hello and Welcome!

A small (but doubtless elite!) group of us will be meeting up in Edinburgh on Saturday 22nd August at the book festival. Details are available here. If you fancy the trip to Edinburgh, you'd be more than welcome to join.
