Where Were You When Man First Reached the Moon?

You're undoubtedly well aware that next Monday, July 20th, is the Fortieth Anniversary of the fulfillment of President Kennedy's challenge of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth." Where were you when this happened?

For me, I was watching Cream perform in Baltimore on their final tour. Between every few numbers Ginger Baker (drummer) would slip backstage for a moment and return. After one trip he brought the microphone close and said, "You Yanks just landed a man on the moon!"

For those of you around then, what is your story?

. . .Let's see, I would have been ten years old and it was summer vacation. . .so, knowing my mother, I was outside playing.

That's the best I can do since I have a terrible long term memory.

Oh, wait, David just told me it was after midnight, so I was probably sleeping!

White Bear Lake, Minnesota. I think the footage we now see of the landing process was not broadcast live and that may be why I don't remember too much about it from that Saturday afternoon. I do recall my mother telling my brother (15) and me (almost 12) that it would be several hours before they stepped out on the moon and that it would be after we were in bed. "Aw, Mommmmm!" That night, they got us up out of bed to let us watch it. It was so terribly late at night (9:56 pm). On a Saturday. During the summer when school was out. We got to watch a few minutes and then it was off to bed again. Unforgettable.

I was 14 and there was no problem staying up for it. Actually, it was a Sunday night, Vivaldirules, but with school out and our family on vacation anyway, no one much cared about bedtime. Watching it on our 12-inch black and white GE television (of course, the camera they had on the moon was B&W, so that didn't really matter), with my uncle saying over and over again, "You know, this is costing us a million dollars a minute!" If he had been alive when the Berlin Wall was torn down, he probably would only have cared about how much it was going to cost to clean up that mess.

I don't remember watching the landing, but I do remember watching the return splash down on a neighbor's black-and-white TV.

I guess I'm more curious than everybody else - why ever not?

Me, I was watching the landing in the TV room of Warners holiday camp on Hayling island (UK). (Wife & kids not interested)

Because not only was I not born, but my parents wouldn't remember it either (they would have been 5 and 6).
