Calibre - can there be only one?
I'm trying to set up my new Sony reader, and I have this odd feeling I'm going to have a bunch of library programs dueling for control. The Sony Library wants to run the show, of course. Calibre, as I understand it, is a more useful and sensible program. And I've also downloaded a DRM ePub book from Adobe Digital Editions, which will not allow me to copy it.
Is there a way to make sure Calibre wins, and use it as my only ebook library? Or will I be doomed to having to remember which book is controlled by which piece of software? |

Once you download books using the other programs, just add them to your calibre library. calibre should be able to successfully send them to your device, though since they are DRMed you wont be able to view/convert them in calibre

Thanks! I didn't realize I could transfer files I can't view.

Update: I'm afraid it doesn't work. The file is an ePub file with Adobe DRM. It doesn't allow copying. The copy Calibre made for its library could be transferred to my reader, but not read.

I use calibre a lot. For transferring secure ePub, PDF, or LRX files, I still use the Sony library software. Before plugging in the Sony, make sure the Sony library's sync function is turned off. Import the ebooks you want to transfer to the Sony library software, then connect the Sony reader to the computer. Then drag and drop the ebooks into the Sony icon on the left panel. Doing these minimal steps will not mess up the collections that were set up under calibre. And I don't usually use Adobe DE for anything.

All this is helping me. I didn't even know the word 'import'. Turning the Sony sync off might help me. Is it like a trap?

It might be easier for you to learn how to strip off the DRM from the book you purchased and then just use calibre. Added benefit is you know you will not have to worry when changing devices in the future.
