Not clear about secure ePub

Someone posted in another thread about Books on Board selling Star Trek books in secure ePub. How does this work on a Sony, exactly? Can I just buy one, download it and load it right onto my sony using Calibre? Can I somehow load it onto my iPod Touch as well? What do I need to do to unlock it---is it like eReader with using my credit card, or do I need something else? And can the DRM be removed if necessary?

Right now, I am using Secure eReader because it loads easily onto my iPod and can load onto the Sony once it has been liberated But I have found recently that my converted files don't look as nice, and a greater percentage of them are needing too much cleaning up afterward. So if secure ePub would give me current books I can just buy and load right onto the Sony and iPod (and they are in a format which, unlike the Sony, isn't proprietary) that might be a better option. But I want to make sure I can use them easily and they will be fairly future-safe. And I hate Adobe Digital Edition, it keeps trying to make me download updates and it is not useable (i.e. it won't run) unless you do.

Secure ePub is using Adobe ADEPT DRM, see Adobe ADEPT DRM for EPUB circumvented.

You need a Windows PC with Adobe Digital Editions to authorize your PRS-505 to your AdobeID (one time operation) and then either a Windows PC or a Mac to download the ebooks within ADE. Once downloaded, you can transfer them to your PRS-505 any way you want. Stanza reads DRM-free ePubs on your iPod Touch.

If you are on Windows, you'll need Adobe Digital Editions and you'll need to activate it. Then with ADE running, plug in your 505 and activate it as well. Then you can use eBook Library or ADE to move your ePub over to your 505. You can then use eBook Library to move the ePub into your collections.

Yes there is a way to remove the DRM from ePub. See https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39423 for the thread on it.

I think you need Adobe Digital Editions installed (and updated) to download the book whether you're removing DRM or not. From there, assuming your device is registered in ADE you should be able to copy the file with Calibre.

The DRM can be removed (look in the EPUB forum) and at that point you can convert to another format or not and copy as you would any other non-DRM book.

But I'm not an expert and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!

If the vendor is using ADE download links, which are just acsm-files (xml files containing a Adobe Content Server "fulfillmentToken" data), then usually ADE would open and download the ebook automatically. Alternatively one can just save the acsm-file, open it and copy the real link to the epub file and download the file via browser, wget or something else...

Interesting. If you do that (download using the real link) and remove the DRM does that mean you can bypass ADE entirely?

Thanks. I am on a Mac and find Adobe a huge pain, so I will stick with eReader for now.

ADE is just an application and is working on Mac OS. May i ask why you think that Adobe is "a huge pain"?

Some of the things that drive me crazy about ADE:

- it forces you to update to the latest version; you can't continue to run a version you are happy with
- in the current version, I often see a bug where the selection highlight is off by one from where I am actually pointing
- It seems to be written in flash so if you right-click on elements you often get the Flash menu instead of a context menu as you would expect
- It feels sluggish in general (granted, Calibre and Sony's Library are even worse)
- Its not immediately obvious if you have an authorized Reader and how to re- or de-authorize it

Its still better than the Sony library though
