Hello all,
I thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself. I've been an avid reader since the fifth grade, over a quarter century ago. My interests have always been somewhat eclectic ranging from Fantasy and Science Fiction to Mystery as well as history, philosophy, and science. I also enjoy writing.
Up until recently I didn't give ebook readers much thought. They were seemed nice enough but they were too expensive to really bother with. I was content with my books which. I have quite large collection, I still have nearly book I've ever owned, I think. Over the last few months I've been having increasing sinus problems, feelings of pressure and headaches among other things. One of the factors behind them seems to be my books. At first I feared mold or something but after a hundred dollars in tests none was found. More recently I've noticed reading, even new books seems to bring on symptoms. In light of the above I've shifted from thinking of ebook readers as an interesting novelty and luxury to my current thought that I really need to get one. After a few weeks of staring at the Amazon Kindle and the Newegg listing for the jetBook to list the top contenders I had ealy on, I ended up here. I think I ran across the link here in a user review on some other site. |

Hello Tyrnon & welcome to MobileRead.
As a rabid fan of electronic books, I can only encourage you to go ahead and decide which reader you want and then buy it. There is one possible downsides to the JetBook -- so far it doesn't support any of the DRM formats. This effectively locks you out of most current releases unless you are willing to purchase an eBook with DRM and then remove the DRM so you can read it on the JetBook. It may or may not matter to you that it uses an Reflective LCD screen instead of an E Ink one. Both of the readers that I own (Kindle v1 and Sony PRS-505) have E Ink screens and I find them very easy on the eyes, even for a long reading session. I have no experience with the Reflective LCD one, but the MobileRead Wiki says that it doesn't use any form of backlighting, so it may be every bit as comfortable to use. I'm sure that others will drop in with comments on their experiences with the readers they own. Oh, by the way, if you like SF/F, be sure to check out the Baen Free Library and then Webscription.net. All the books offered at these sites are DRM-free and available in formats compatible with every known reader on the market. There's also quite a lot of SF/F -- classic and contemporary (under a Creative Commons license) -- available for free from right here at MobileRead and also from Feedbooks. We're glad you've joined us at MobileRead. Here's hoping to get to know you better. |

Welcome to MobileRead, Tyrnon!
Elsi has pretty much said it all, so I'll just say welcome and direct you to all the free ebooks (in the blue bar at the top of the page) that you will be able to download once you decide on a reading device. Happy reading! |
