Sony and Mac

I have a Mac with Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, no XP loaded on. Is there any way that I could use a Sony e-reader with it. Mainly I want to use it for pdf's, or do I have to buy a netbook with Windows XP to do this? I'm not a dweeb, but I'm not a nerd either. I just need a straight answer, as the sales people have been less that informative. I could load XP on my Mac, but I'd rather not. I'd rather get a netbook if I can't use Microsoft Office for Mac with the Sony e-reader. Thanks!

To register your Sony Reader with the Sony store, you must use a Windows PC. But you don't /have/ to register it, if you don't want to buy from the Sony Store, and are happy with other sources of books.

Calibre is cross-platform, and a great way to convert ebooks for use on the Sony. (& to store, organise & transfer ebooks as well.)

I have a Mac and a Sony and have been just fine. I have/had no interest in the Sony store so I just bought it, loaded Calibre onto my machine and dowloaded books from here/Fictionwise (multiformat), Feedbooks etc. and tranferred them over. Smooth sailing all the way.

Welcome to MobileRead, rubylamore!

I have a Sony 700 and have never purchased anything from the Sony store. MR has a huge selection of free ebooks you can download. Take a look. You might find something you like.

Happy Reading.

I agree with most of what is written here. I happen to care about the sony store. I went out and bought a cheap Fry's laptop. Full size, but about the same price as a netbook. I may go netbook when this one dies. If you do not care about the sony store, go calibre for the mac and enjoy. Even if you go the netbook way, get calibre for one of the machines, great for converting formats. I personally use calibre on my mac as I only turn the windows machine on about once a week.

Ruby - you might want to look for help in the Calibre sub-forum... but when you connect your Sony to your Mac, you should see its drive icon appear on your desktop. Also, when you have Calibre open and then connect your Sony, you should see the hourglass in the lower right of Calibre turn over for a few seconds and the Sony appears in the list of devices in the upper left of the Calibre screen.

By the way, which Sony model did you get?

I got the 505 with the light cover. I took Calibre off and reloaded it, got it a few pdf's transferred over successfully, so thanks for responding, again, so quickly. I'll go to that forum and read up on it more since I love reading directions and would like to read the users manual completely. Since the reader came with the disc for windows, the user's manual doesn't show up. Ruby.

FYI Kaz's post shows that Sony has just announced Mac support by the end of the summer.

The manual should already be loaded on your Reader, but really the Quickstart paper guide that came with it tells you most of the good stuff.
