Axim X51 rumored specs from a Dell rep

After last weekend's disappointing Axim X51 fake which was originally from a Gillete deodorant ad (*gasp*), we must alert our readers to use the following information with care. Apparently an Aximsite user had a chat with a Dell tech rep who told him that the X51 series will hit markets sometime in October. Even better, he sent him some specs.

Assuming the specs are legit, the X51 series will also consist of three devices: X51 416MHz, X51 520MHz, X51v 624MHz. That's new: Consumer IrDA, scroll dial (!), 256MB ROM (only the X51v) and Windows Mobile 2005 (which will be also offered as an upgrade to existing X50 customers). Overall X50 owners can breathe a sigh of relief because there is no reason yet for them to upgrade the hardware (fine, I wouldn't mind the 256MB BIS).

Is it just me, or do the X51* specs seem really unimpressive? I don't see any quantum leaps over the current range of X50* devices, to be honest. Certainly nothing to make people pay the sort of money listed.

I was really hoping for more than this... (and here I am, just breaking in my X50v )

Earlier rumors stated that the X51 is only a marginal update to the X50. Maybe Dell believes that people would rather buy a "new" PDA with WM 5.0 than an "old" one.

If true, it's not much of an upgrade and why does Dell name it that way...The V series with VGA series is a different beast altogether, it should have been say X55 to the X51 of the QVGA models.

Again, if true, I am disappointed with the following: 1100mAh standard battery and no built-in harddrive. Unless, they could come out with great power savings software, or that the RAM is non-volatile, 1100mAh will not last on the X51V... dual wireless, VGA screen, mucho RAM - all need battery juice....

Yeah, the battery's probably the biggest disappointment for me (that is, if the specs are legit). I've already noticed how much faster the power drain is on my new X50v over the old ipaq. Lucky I also bought the extended battery (even if it makes the dell look pregnant and no longer fit in it's case )

Craig, tip: turn down screen brightness! That is a real battery life saver for the X50v. Other than that, when I am on a trip, and I know I mostly read e-books, I also throttle CPU.

That's a good start, thanks Alexander! I like how you can set the brightness levels for whether it's on the charger or not, nice touch (missing on my h1930).

I like the idea of manually throttling the power back too.

Craig.
