I am a long time ebook reader with my Palm TX. Better readers are now available and someone on a different forum recommended here.

My main interest is Crime Fiction

Mine is better!

Okay, okay, here's the real difference: The 700 has a touch screen which the 505 does not. Also the 700 has a built in screen light you can use as needed. Problem with the touch screen is that you lose screen resolution with it. Compare the two side-by-side and you'll immediately see the difference. OTOH, lots of 700 owners, although they acknowledge the better resolution in the 505, point out that, after using the 700 for a while, they don't really notice it and like it fine.

Cassidy did a good job pointing out the differences, and I completely and utterly agree with her first sentence!! Mine is better.....

No backlighting on the 505. I much prefer it that way

Thanks! We have some frinds that live on Maui. One of these days we'll get there. I was sure the video on Sony's site showed a backlight. Score one for my Palm TX then.

In terms of resolution do both the Sony and the Kindle read well in direct sunlight?

the 700 has sidelighting, I believe, but no lighting on the 505. It reads better than a book (imo) in direct sunlight. I have no experience with a kindle though....
