Both grandparents fought in WW II. Paternal grandfather still in bits in northern France though there is a nice white cross with his name on it. Maternal grandfather came back but his mind was shot to bits and he spent 30 odd years in a very remote "hospital" before he died. Thank goodness no other member of my family has felt moved to join the armed services - though if it be thought that makes any of them lesser people I would be happy to put them up against anyone else.

Grandpa was a Flying Fortress gunner, shot down over Germany. He survived a couple of years in a POW camp, followed by a "death march" at the end of the war. A lot of those who were with him didn't make it.
Dad left the navy just before the Vietnam War ramped up. My own generation of the family steered clear of military service. |

My maternal granddad went to the Mexican army school and as a result he was engaged in the army for 5 years. He fought in the Cristero war as lieutenant and left the army for good after his contract expired.
His father-in-law was an army general. He fought in the Mexican revolution. Nobody else in my known family followed a military career, although sometimes I wonder if I should. Of course I did my mandatory one year military service assigned to a reserve cavalry unit. But I was never called (not even for exercises) so I guess that doesn't count. |

My grandmother's half brother was in the resistance in WWII. He disappeared and has never been found/identified.

Both grandfathers served. One in the USAF, the other in the Marines (fought in WWII, and we have the "souvenir" sword he was "given" by an enemy soldier). My Mom and male-genetic-donor both were in the Air Force, though not for long. Both older brothers served in the Air Force and Marines. Both parents-in-law were in the Army and my brother-in-law is currently over in the sandbox courtesy of the Army.
