Do I need to turn off screen or can I?

Hi, I get a question here.
DR1000s is based on EInk. Do I need to turn off the screen when I am not reading for 2-3 hours? If I leave the screen on will the screen be damaged?
if I should how to do that except turn off the unit? prs505 have a switch can do that but I can not find anything in DR1000s.

Thanks

The screen shouldn't be damaged if kept on (I've kept mine on for more than 2 days without issues). Unfortunately, iRex has not yet implemented a suspend-to-flash feature like (yet) the Sony has, so there is no way to "push a button" and put the device to sleep.

If you are not using the device for 2-3 hours, you might want to shut it down to conserve battery. This is the only way to turn the screen off right now, although you have to go through the longish boot up time later (and have to re-open your old documents).

Just agreeing with the above. It will not damage the screen to leave it on, but you probably want to turn it off anyway in order to conserve the battery.

I thought that the DR1000 went into "hybernate" mode when inactive for a while, and used no battery power. Or is this a "low power", rather than a "zero power", mode?

This is a supposedly "low power" mode. I remember someone saying that it wasn't really that low, actually.

There were two power saving modes planned for the DR1000. The first is just to extend the battery usage slightly by putting it into a low power mode in between page turns or brief pauses (which is the one that has been implemented).

The one they have not added yet is the long term mode that becomes the replacement for shutting the device down. Ideally, this is the mode that you'd want it to be in if you're not reading for 2-3 hours.

It's the difference between suspend to ram versus suspend to flash, if you are interested. One is really quick (ram), but still draws some power in order to maintain the memory. The other is slower (flash), but puts the entire state of the machine onto the flash "drive" so you can essentially kill the power (except enough to recognize when it needs to "wake up").

I'm a new owner and I'm a little confused about this point too. About the new low-power mode implemented in 1.6, is it automatic (i.e. device goes into low-power mode as soon as it's drawn the screen, and wakes up when a sensor or stylus is used)? And is there no other mode besides this and "OFF"?

Also, how long does the battery last in the low-power mode, e.g. if I disabled the automatic shutdown and just left the device ON but untouched? I'm thinking if it lasts at least 16 hours, I can just charge overnight every night and leave it on all day, so I don't have to wait for it to boot up every time.

If you turn it on (in the settings menu) - it is automatic.

It doesn't last 16 hours - forget it Have you actuallly read the thread?

OK, so this is what "Use power savings" means. The description in the settings menu is very vague...

Sorry ... yes, I read the section you quoted, I guess I'm still incredulous and needed to be told twice. I like the display quality and form factor of this device, but it seems ridiculous that it the battery lasts less than a day even in the "power saving" mode (on an eInk device, no less), and I need to shut it down completely after every use.

I was hoping to have it around my office so I can use my idle time to catch up on some articles (esp. when my desktop computer is busy doing stuff), but waiting 30+ seconds for it to boot up every time is frustrating. I guess I'll just have to keep it plugged in most of the day, and select "Only use automatic shutdown when running on battery."

I will make a wish list on shutdown with leaving last page on screen.

Right now, yes. The current mode will get triggered after 10 seconds of inactivity (I think that's the right number), and then wakes up when you use the stylus or hit a sensor. There is another mode planned that will replace turning the device off, but it has not been added yet.

Reports from 1.5 seemed to indicate that if you let it sit in the sleep mode you'll get around 12 hours (give or take). This power mode is not intended to be used for leaving it on all day instead of shutting down and booting up. That's what the other mode will be for.

The current power mode is just for brief periods (between page turns, letting it sit for a few minutes, etc) in order to extend the battery life. The mode you're talking about (leaving it on all day so you don't have to wait for it to boot up) is supposed to be added in a future update.
