Fossil Wrist PDA bites the dust

Remember Fossil's Wrist PDA, the tiniest incarnation of a PalmOS handheld which had hit markets earlier this year? Well, BargainPDA received word that watch maker Fossil has lost faith in its mini-handheld and already began phasing it out. I could wax poetic here about the reasons of its failure (outdated system, small display, little RAM, high price), but perhaps it's best if I just leave it alone and we all remember Fossil as yet another brave Palm OS licensee of the past.

You know… I never touched one of these but read a lot about them… and it’s a real shame.

It’s a shame because the wrist watch has, since pretty much the first digital watch with more than three functions (not including egg timer) stopped evolving.

And the Fossil Palm was an attempt to rejuvenate that evolution.

Take a look at these approximations:

The first dat watch came out in the mid 80s. I know this because with my first ever job I bought one, a Casio, with one of my first pay packets. The watch lasted precisely 3 days because, on holiday in Portugal I jumped in the swimming poll with it on.

So… 20 years later, where are we in terms of data watches. At the same time as my watch drowning we had the first PDA, the Psion Series A (was it 1?) and this has evolved into PDAs of awesome magnitude that can play movies and manage lives, let alone compute.

The desktop, equally has evolved beyond compare from those days of Amiga et al.

How’s this for some progress: “This latest Databank model can store 25 sets of data consisting of names and phone numbers which are automatically sorted in the watch. This model also features an 8 digit calculator with currency conversion mode.”

25 sets of data? I’m pretty sure my short-lived non aquatic Casio had this.

Of all the devices we have, that which could be the most useful has evolved the least.

Just imagine your ideal wrist watch and then ask why you cant have it

Last I had heard,they hadn't even released one for public consumption yet! The only wrist mounted PDAs I've seen were PPC based.

I've got several choice words here for this. But then, the word "moron" comes to mind to whomever is planning the actual hardware/software matchup with the PalmOS world for those devices. They are always SOOOOO close, ... but "like a poor marksman, ... [they] keep missing the target!" (Star Trek 2 - James Kirk to Khan).

Ugh. It's enough to get you all depressed.
